Job Responsibilities and Requirements
This document outlines the general job responsibilities and requirements for positions within the Beaverton City Department of Public Works (DPW). Specific roles may have additional duties and qualifications.
General Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance and repairs on city infrastructure, including roads, sidewalks, water lines, and sewer systems.
- Be mechanically inclined for maintenance and repair of equipment with a knowledge of basic welding.
- Operate and maintain a variety of heavy equipment, such as excavators, backhoes, loaders, and dump trucks.
- Conduct routine inspections of city property and infrastructure to identify and address potential issues.
- Respond to emergency calls related to public works issues, including water main breaks, fallen trees, and storm damage.
- Participate in snow removal operations during winter months.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment maintenance.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures.
- Collaborate with other city departments and external contractors as needed.
- Assist with general groundskeeping and maintenance of city parks and facilities.
General Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid Michigan Driver's License; a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with appropriate endorsements may be required for some positions.
- Ability to operate various hand and power tools safely and effectively.
- Physical ability to perform strenuous tasks, including lifting heavy objects, working in various weather conditions, and standing for extended periods.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, and construction principles is often preferred.
- Prior experience in public works, construction, or a related field is highly desirable.
- Ability to respond to emergency call-outs outside of normal working hours.
- Successful completion of a background check and drug screening.
Training and Certifications
Certain positions within the DPW may require specific training or certifications, such as:
- Water Distribution System Operator Certification (S3 & D3 Minimum)
- Wastewater Collection System Operator Certification (L1 & L2 Minimum)
- CDL Driver's License Class B
- Traffic Control Certification
- First Aid and CPR Certification
