Job Title: SolidWorks 3D Control Panel Designer
Job Description
We are seeking an experienced SolidWorks 3D Designer to support a growing control panel business. In this role, you design 3D sheet metal enclosures and the electrical controls inside the panels using SolidWorks, helping deliver high-quality solutions for data center and related applications. You join a collaborative, growth-focused team where you can expand your skills and grow into broader project responsibilities over time.
Responsibilities
- Design 3D control panels and sheet metal enclosures using SolidWorks for a variety of industrial and data center applications.
- Develop detailed 3D models of sheet metal enclosures, including dimensions, mounting details, and structural features.
- Design and lay out electrical controls inside the panels, ensuring components are placed efficiently and safely within the enclosure.
- Apply knowledge of electrical concepts such as controls, circuits, voltage, and wiring to create practical and manufacturable panel designs.
- Collaborate closely with the lead designer and other team members to review requirements, clarify design details, and ensure alignment with project goals.
- Prepare and update design documentation, models, and drawings to support manufacturing at multiple facilities.
- Support the panel manufacturing teams by answering design-related questions and making adjustments as needed.
- Contribute to a team-based environment by assisting with other projects and tasks outside of core controls work when needed.
- Maintain high standards of accuracy and quality in all design work while meeting project timelines.
- Occasionally visit another company location, if needed, to support design or production activities related to control panels.
Essential Skills
- At least 3 years of SolidWorks 3D design experience.
- At least 3 years of control panel design or sheet metal design experience.
- At least 3 years of 3D design experience in a mechanical or related environment.
- Hands-on experience designing sheet metal enclosures and integrating mechanical and electrical components.
- Knowledge of electrical concepts such as controls, circuits, voltage, and wiring sufficient to support control panel design.
- Ability to create accurate, detailed 3D models and design documentation in SolidWorks.
- Strong mechanical design skills with attention to detail and manufacturability.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a lead designer and cross-functional teams.
- Strong communication skills in an interactive, team-based environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) is preferred.
- Experience working in a panel shop or similar manufacturing environment.
- Background supporting data center or similar industrial projects is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to grow into broader responsibilities, such as managing projects from start to finish.
- Willingness to occasionally travel to another company location if required.
Work Environment
This position is based primarily at a Sterling Heights facility and is office-based. You work mainly at a desk in a casual office setting, seated in an individual cubicle within an open, interactive environment where team members communicate frequently. The role focuses on computer-based 3D design work in SolidWorks, with panels manufactured at both the local facility and an additional location. You collaborate closely with one other lead designer and engage with a broader, team-oriented group that supports one another and steps in to help on different projects as needed. Workload is steady for the foreseeable future, providing stability and ongoing opportunities to contribute to a growing panel design and service business.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sterling Heights, MI.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $33.00 - $38.00/hr.
