The Mechatronics Automation Engineer will lead the development, implementation, and optimization of advanced automation systems across axle manufacturing processes. Operating from AAM's World Headquarters campus, this person will focus on integrating mechanical, electrical, and software systems to drive efficiency, quality, and innovation in manufacturing. The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in mechatronics, a hands-on approach to problem-solving, and a passion for smart factory technologies. They should also have excellent analytical, communication, and project management skills. Preferably, this candidate would have experience with MES systems and integration into automation workflows. Exposure to lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, and TPM practices, as well as knowledge of cybersecurity standards for industrial control systems are also preferred, but not required. - Leads integration of PLCs, robotics, sensors, vision systems, and SCADA platforms across multiple plant locations.
- Collaborates with multi-functional teams (mechanical, electrical, controls, quality) to deploy new automation projects from concept through commissioning.
- Monitors and manages project budgets, ensuring alignment to financial targets.
- Troubleshoots, debugs, and optimizes existing automation systems for performance, uptime, and cycle time improvements.
- Provides support to product launch teams as needed, contributing technical expertise and process knowledge.
- Supports Industry 4.0 initiatives including IoT integration, predictive maintenance, and data-driven process control.
- Develops and maintains electrical and controls documentation including schematics, logic diagrams, and software backups.
- Remains engaged with current manufacturing operations and practices to identify continuous improvement opportunities.
- Researches and develops advanced manufacturing techniques and equipment to increase throughput, reduce scrap/rework, lower costs, enhance quality, and improve process reliability.
- Partners with prototype teams to validate manufacturing assumptions and assess the feasibility of proposed production methods.

- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation, or related field.
- 3+ years of relevant experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably automotive or axle/drivetrain systems.
- Proficient in PLC programming (Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Siemens), HMI/SCADA design, and industrial networking.
- Hands-on experience with robotics (e.g., Fanuc, ABB, KUKA) and machine vision systems.
- Strong understanding of control systems, servo/motion control, pneumatics, and safety circuits.
- Willingness and ability to travel occasionally to support automation at other facilities.
