The Opportunity

We are partnering with organizations in St. Johns that are seeking Tool Makers. Key Responsibilities

• Interpret blueprints, sketches, and 3D models to plan the fabrication of tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures.
• Operate a variety of precision machine tools, including lathes, mills, grinders, and CNC equipment, to manufacture components.
• Fabricate, assemble, and fit complex tooling components to precise specifications using hand tools and specialized equipment.
• Perform precision measurements and inspections using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and optical comparators to ensure quality and dimensional accuracy.
• Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain existing production tooling and machinery to minimize downtime and optimize performance.
• Select appropriate materials and heat treatments for tool components based on design specifications and functional requirements.
• Conduct testing and validation of newly manufactured or repaired tools to ensure they meet operational standards and product specifications.

Recommended Qualifications

• Completion of a recognized Tool and Die Maker Apprenticeship or equivalent vocational training.
• Proven proficiency in operating a variety of manual and CNC machine tools (e.g., mills, lathes, grinders, EDM).
• Strong ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, schematics, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
• Expertise in using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, and CMMs.
• Solid understanding of various metal properties, heat treatment processes, and machining characteristics.
• Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills for tool repair and optimization.

Bonus Qualifications

• Proficiency with CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, Mastercam).
• Experience operating and programming CNC machining centers.
• TIG/MIG welding and general fabrication skills.
• Knowledge of heat treatment processes for various tool steels.
