Industrial Utilities Mechanic - Fire-Tube Boiler Operations
Is a well-tuned steam plant your happy place?
If you thrive on keeping firetube boilers and facility utilities running smoothly, this role is for you. You’ll balance preventive, planned, and reactive maintenance while ensuring our manufacturing environment operates safely and efficiently.
Why this role matters
- Boiler health drives production uptime and energy efficiency.
- Predictable maintenance beats emergency repairs—your PM discipline sets the tone.
- Accurate records guide smarter decisions across labor, materials, and lifecycle costs.
What you will handle
- Core utilities upkeep: boilers, compressors, chillers, water softeners, drainage systems, and building systems—tracked via PM attainment and planned vs. reactive metrics.
- Root cause analysis of failures and updates to maintenance schedules to prevent repeat issues.
- Maintenance software use for documenting PMs, corrective work, service hours, and parts/labor spend; reliable entries in the work order system to hit attainment goals.
- Vendor coordination: schedule, oversee, and verify third-party preventive maintenance and repairs.
- Continuous improvement: spot and execute modifications that boost efficiency, conserve energy, and slow component wear.
- Predictive maintenance on critical assets to lift availability and reliability.
- Facility service requests: lighting, bathroom fixtures, locks, wall repairs, bump posts, and employee safety signage.
- Boiler room specifics: inspect steam valves and traps; prepare boilers for inspection (open/clean tubes and drums; replace refractory brick and burners); monitor gauges, pumps, and valves.
- Boiler room equipment repairs: valves, bearings, packing, gauges, expansion joints, pumps, electrical controls, and PRVs.
- Water quality: perform daily tests under the direction of the contracted Water Quality Engineer; maintain condensate and feed water systems.
- Emergency systems: monitor fuel oil tanks for diesel generator sets; test emergency generator(s) per schedule.
- Resource tracking: record steam, water, and gas consumption.
- Compliance: follow GMP and SOP requirements.
- Tools and environment: safely use hand/power tools, electric meters, and material handling gear; able to work around multiple allergens.
What you bring
- Education: Associate’s or technical degree in Mechanics, Electrical, or Computer Science preferred—or equivalent education/experience.
- Experience: 5+ years with high-pressure steam boilers in a manufacturing setting.
- Credential: Boiler Operator Certificate/License.
- Core capabilities:
- Mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical troubleshooting/repair.
- Welding skills; ability to interpret mechanical, piping, and electrical drawings.
- Facility plumbing repair competence.
- Compressed air systems troubleshooting (Kaeser preferred).
- Electrical diagnostics from minor faults to complex issues: motor starter circuits, VFDs, I/O switch functions, and equipment wiring.
- Operate Hilo trucks, scissor lifts, and boom lifts; pass required Roskam testing.
- Computer literacy for Building Automation Systems (BAS).
