Title: Swim Instructor
Reports To: Aquatics Director
Wage: $18 - $22/hour
Status: Part Time, Non-Exempt
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Swim Instructor is responsible for leadership and instruction in aquatic program spaces, including The Clubhouse Aquatic Center. The Swim Instructor will facilitate the American Red Cross Learn to Swim programming in a way that fits our community's wide variety of needs and abilities.
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide primary supervision and instruction of swim students, both youth and adults.
Ensure in collaboration with Lifeguards the enforcement of all policies and procedures in aquatic program spaces.
Assist in water rescues, as necessary, and demonstrate confidence in the building’s emergency response action plan
Maintain records of daily attendance, progress, incidents, and feedback.
Participate in the daily stewardship of assigned program spaces, including, but not limited to, cleaning and safety inspections.
Demonstrate leadership to ensure conduct, safety, and positive development of members.
Program Development and Implementation
Establish and maintain, in partnership with the Aquatics Director, program goals and settings that ensure the health, safety, and sense of belonging for Club- and community members.
Develop and implement individualized learning programs that prioritize safety and contribute to the personal development of our club- and community members.
Participate in the evaluation of programs and ensure programs/activities respond to member needs and address their gender and cultural diversity.
Propose to the Aquatics Director program and activity expenditures within an approved budget.
Supervision
Supervise youth and adult club members, guests, and volunteers to ensure safe, high-quality programming execution.
Perform proper and timely record keeping and reporting including activities and events conducted, breakdowns of daily participation figures, notable achievements, and any problems/issues.
Additional Responsibilities
May support special programs and events (i.e. Youth of the Year and Awards Programs), and implement other Club activities as necessary.
Consult with the Aquatics Director concerning member and Club issues.
Report to grantors relevant data and narratives.
Participate in regular team meetings and in-service trainings.
Relationships
Internal: Maintain close, daily contact with Club staff (professional and volunteer), Club members, community members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, and advise/counsel.
External: Maintain positive relationships with partner organizations, clients, and contracted services, as needed.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
High school diploma or GED, or working towards it.
6 months; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience preferred.
Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification, or other equivalent experience.
First Aid and CPR/AED for professional rescuers certification, preferred.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics.
Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and internet applications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT/QUALIFICATIONS:
Instructors are expected to teach both in and out of the water, therefore strong personal swimming skills are required.
Must be able to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.
Must be able to squat or bend to communicate at youth’s level.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and carry up to 10 pounds for short periods.
Must be willing and able to actively participate in regular in-service training and maintain minimum fitness levels required to perform duties.
