Join Volunteers of America Michigan (VOAMI) as a Resident Specialist and play a vital role in creating a safe, supportive, and dignified living environment for Veterans experiencing housing instability.

As a Resident Specialist, you’ll be the first point of contact for residents, guests, volunteers, and staff—setting the tone for a welcoming and secure community. You’ll work closely with case managers, kitchen staff, facilities, and leadership to ensure smooth daily operations and positive resident experience.

What You’ll Do

Support & Engage Residents

• Provide safe, ethical, and compassionate care in alignment with VOAMI policies
• Build rapport and maintain positive relationships with residents
• Assist with daily activities including meal service, late plates, snacks, and resident check-in/check-out
• Provide residents access to medication storage at designated times
• Monitor resident well-being through hourly walk-throughs and documentation
• Communicate resident needs and concerns to appropriate staff
• Accurately complete rounds reports, end-of-shift reports, and incident documentation
• Administer life-saving interventions when needed (911 calls, Narcan, CPR, AED)

Ensure Safety & Security

• Monitor and secure doors, gates, windows, and common areas
• Conduct routine inspections of the facility and resident areas
• Serve as a visible presence throughout the building to promote safety
• Respond professionally to crises using de-escalation techniques
• Coordinate emergency responses, including evacuation procedures
• Maintain familiarity with emergency systems and utilities (fire systems, shutoffs, emergency contacts)

Operations & Teamwork

• Welcome and manage non-staff visitors and external volunteers
• Accept and document external donations
• Report maintenance issues and escalate concerns appropriately
• Participate in facility cleanliness and light maintenance tasks
• Provide shift-change updates to oncoming Resident Specialists
• Attend staff meetings and complete required trainings
• Collaborate effectively with outside organizations and internal teams

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience in direct client care or security
  (Equivalent education/experience and demonstrated ability to work with similar populations will be considered)
• Knowledge of crisis management and de-escalation techniques
• Ability to remain calm and professional in emergency situations
• Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
• Excellent documentation and organizational abilities
• Experience with Microsoft Office and computerized databases
• Ability to multitask in a dynamic environment
• Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

• Ability to sit, stand, walk, speak, see, and hear throughout the shift
• Manual dexterity and close/distant vision required
• Work primarily indoors, with occasional outdoor duties
• Frequent interaction with a diverse public
• Environment may include interruptions and emotionally charged situations
