Clinical Lab Tech Supervisor
Overview
The Technical Supervisor is responsible for the technical and administrative management, which may include the chemistry laboratory, including general chemistry assays and immunoassays, hematology, coagulation, and urinalysis, and specimen processing. This position is under the direction of the Administrative Director and the Medical Director. The position provides technical supervision on site, and is responsible for the proper performance of all assays performed by staff working in the clinical laboratory. The supervisor is responsible for ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements as they pertain to the laboratory. In addition, the supervisor demonstrates compliance with all elements of the DFCI Code of Conduct and Ethical Behavior. The supervisor also must comply with all Institute policies regarding the confidentiality of patient information and the lawful use of any computerized patient data.
Position is 100% on-site at the Dana-Farber Merrimack Valley location in Methuen, MA. Required hours are Monday through Friday, 6:00 am - 3 pm. - Quality Control, Safety, and Compliance: Implements and monitors quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results. Maintains laboratory accreditation and ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards, such as those set by CLIA, The Joint Commission, CAP or other relevant bodies. Ensures adherence to and enforces safety standards and protocols to protect staff and maintain a safe working environment. Keeps up to date with health and safety regulations.
- Inventory and Equipment Management: Oversees the maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment. Manages inventory of supplies and reagents, ensuring that the lab is well-stocked.
- Data Management: Maintains and ensures accurate documentation and reporting of laboratory activities, test results, and quality control measures. Utilizes laboratory information management systems (LIMS) for data tracking and analysis.
- Process Improvement and Problem-Solving: Identifies areas for improvement in laboratory processes and implements changes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. Addresses and resolves any issues or discrepancies that arise in the laboratory operations.
- Collaboration: Works with other departments, healthcare providers, and stakeholders to support patient care and laboratory services.
- Budgeting and Financial Management: Oversees the laboratory's budget, including managing expenses and optimizing resource allocation. Assists in budget preparation and monitors expenditures to ensure cost-effective operations.
- Supervises Staff: Hires and develops team members with the capabilities to achieve organizational goals. Defines and communicates clear expectations, provides regular constructive feedback, and evaluates performance against objectives. Oversees team’s compliance with organizational policies and procedures. Monitors work for efficiency, effectiveness, and quality. Mentors and coaches staff, facilitating training opportunities and supporting career growth. Works with senior management and Human Resources to address performance issues, as appropriate. Promotes and fosters a healthy and productive work environment within the team and with groups across the Institute.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- In-depth understanding of laboratory procedures, techniques, and equipment
- Familiarity with various types of laboratory tests and their clinical significance
- Awareness of relevant regulations and standards, such as CLIA, TJC, CAP, and OSHA
- Ability to ensure compliance with legal and accreditation requirements
- Skills in implementing and monitoring quality control and quality assurance programs
- Ability to analyze data to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results
- Strong leadership skills to manage and motivate a team
- Knowledge of staff training, development, and performance evaluation

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
The position requires a bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field such as biology, chemistry, or medical technology, with a preference for Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology. Candidates must have 5–7 years of experience in a moderate or high-complexity clinical laboratory, with at least 5 years in the subspecialties of Chemistry or Hematology, depending on the lab section. Management or supervisory experience is preferred, and MT/MLS (ASCP) certification is required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Direct supervision of Assistant Laboratory Supervisors, Medical Technologists, Laboratory Assistant, and Specimen Processing Technicians.

The hiring range is based on market pay structures, with individual salaries determined by factors such as business needs, market conditions, internal equity, and based on the candidate’s relevant experience, skills and qualifications.
For union positions, the pay range is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
