Cnc Machinist

Kentwood, MI
Job Title: CNC Machinist – 1st Shift Job Description

This full-time CNC Machinist role is a 1st shift position, working Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (approximately 50 hours per week) with optional weekend overtime. You will operate and oversee up to three CNC machines at a time in a high-volume, high-precision production environment, performing tool changes, loading programs, making minor program edits, and conducting regular quality checks on small steel parts produced to extremely tight tolerances.

Responsibilities
  • Attend daily shift meetings to review production priorities, assigned workstations, and machine schedules.
  • Set up and operate up to three CNC machines simultaneously, including mills, lathes, screw machines, grinders, Hydromat, or rotary transfer equipment, depending on experience and department assignment.
  • Perform frequent tool changes, completing up to 8–9 tool changes per day across assigned machines to support continuous production.
  • Load parts and material into the CNC machines and ensure correct fixturing, tooling, and offsets for each job.
  • Pull existing CNC programs for each job and make minor edits as needed to maintain part quality and meet specifications.
  • Monitor machines during operation to identify and resolve issues such as tool wear, dimensional drift, or alarms, minimizing downtime.
  • Read and interpret blueprints to understand dimensions, tolerances, and critical features for each part produced.
  • Perform regular in-process quality inspections using micrometers and calipers, typically every 300–400 parts, to verify parts meet tight tolerance requirements of approximately (+/-) 10–20 microns.
  • Document inspection results as required and take corrective action when parts approach or exceed tolerance limits.
  • Handle and organize finished parts, placing them into appropriate bins and preparing them for shipment to customers.
  • Work with different types and thicknesses of steel, adjusting machine parameters and tooling as needed for material variations.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workstation, including machines, tools, and measurement equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and leadership about production status, quality concerns, and equipment issues.
  • Follow all safety procedures and guidelines while working in a loud, high-volume production environment.
Essential Skills
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience operating CNC machines such as screw machines, CNC mills, or CNC lathes.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience reading and interpreting blueprints to manufacture precision components.
  • At least 5 years of experience making edits to existing CNC programs to maintain part quality and meet specifications.
  • Proficiency with CNC machining operations in a high-volume, high-precision environment.
  • Ability to perform frequent tool changes and changeovers efficiently across multiple machines.
  • Strong blueprint reading skills, including understanding dimensions, tolerances, and geometric features.
  • Experience using precision measuring tools such as micrometers and calipers for in-process quality checks.
  • Ability to hold tight tolerances in the range of approximately (+/-) 10–20 microns on small steel parts.
  • Comfort working with multiple CNC machine types, including mills, lathes, screw machines, grinders, Hydromat, or rotary transfer machines.
  • Troubleshooting skills to identify and correct machining issues related to tooling, programs, or setup.
  • Capability to manage and prioritize work across up to three CNC machines at once.
  • Ability to work 1st shift (Mon–Fri, 6:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.) and handle 50-hour work weeks.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with CNC programming beyond minor program edits is a plus.
  • Background operating high-volume production equipment such as screw machines (e.g., Tornos), ID grinders, centerless grinders, CNC mills, and CNC lathes is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with machining components for applications such as automotive, powertrain, or industrial equipment is advantageous.
  • Ability to adapt to different departments and machine types with training.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, precision parts.
  • Good communication skills and willingness to participate in daily production meetings.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with high production demands.
Why Work Here?

You will join a high-volume, precision-focused manufacturing environment that invests in a wide variety of CNC technologies and provides opportunities to grow across multiple machine types and departments. The culture emphasizes trust and autonomy, with a hands-off yet direct leadership style that allows you to manage your own workstation while being accountable for results. You can personalize your workspace with food, drinks, and music, helping you stay comfortable and focused while meeting production goals. The facility offers stable hours on a consistent 1st shift schedule, optional weekend overtime, and the chance to work on complex, high-precision parts for well-known end customers, building valuable experience and long-term career potential.

Work Environment

The facility is a high-volume, high-precision CNC machining shop running approximately 350 different types of machines, including screw machines (such as Tornos), ID grinders, centerless grinders, CNC mills, CNC lathes, Hydromat, and rotary transfer machines. The environment is fairly loud due to production activity, but it is clean and air conditioned, providing a comfortable temperature-controlled workspace. You will work primarily at your own workstation, overseeing up to three machines at a time and performing frequent tool changes, changeovers, and quality checks. Management maintains a largely hands-off but direct style, giving you independence while setting clear expectations for production and quality. Team members may have food, drinks, and music of their choice at their workstations as long as they meet production demands. The role follows a 1st shift schedule of Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with approximately 50 hours per week and voluntary weekend work available during periods of increased demand.
