Department Head - Women's Department

The UAW Women's Department is looking for a qualified Department Head . This role involves working closely with the UAW Women's Department Director to set department priorities, supervise and direct staff, train and mentor staff and effectively and independently manage and support department objectives.

The mission of the Women’s Department is to work to alleviate the inequities created by race & class while continuing to address gender injustice as it relates to discrimination in hiring, pay, promotion, training, seniority protection and retention in the workplace.

The mission is realized through the four core objectives identified within the Women’s Issues Resolution that was adopted at the 38 Constitutional Convention. The four key objectives are to (1) increase gender equity, (2) advocate for gender-based justice, (3) increase equity in politics and (4) combat gender-based violence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To work under the Direction of the Women’s Department Director.
  • To ensure that the mission and the key objectives above are realized through tangible goals that are smart, strategic and specific.
  • To work with the Assistant Director and the team of staff to ensure that the mission of the Women's Department is being realized through our initiatives and programs.
  • To ensure all department requests are distributed to the staff equitably and effectively.
  • To supervise, train and direct staff through staff development and as concerns or issues arise.
  • To be able to effectively work with women's advocacy groups, non-profits, and governmental agencies.
  • To ensure transparent communication within the department through staff meetings.
  • To communicate the goals of the Women's Department with all IEB Members.
  • To ensure that the concerns and issues brought forth through the Women's Advisory Council are communicated to the IEB.
  • To develop an employee assistance program for sectors that lack EAP Representatives. This would include a national database for childcare, eldercare, mental health and well-being resources.
  • To develop an educational catalog with media content (development of videos, images, and campaigns) on gender-based violence.
  • To develop an educational catalog on preparing women for greater opportunities within the union (ex. elected positions, skilled trades}, or through local, state or federally elected positions.
  • To develop a process to support Regional Women's Liaisons.
  • To develop a social media calendar that supports the goals identified above.
  • To develop a collective bargaining database for work-family language that can be utilized by all sectors.
  • To create a database of Local Union Women's Committee Chairs and Co-Chairs.
  • To develop a mentorship program for members who are local union elected officials, and women's committee chairs or co-chairs.
  • To support and attend the standing Women's Advisory Monthly Meetings.
  • To develop a department succession plan that will identify the critical positions of the department, an action plan for each of those roles and identify core projects and databases.
  • To develop and execute the Women In Organizing Campaign which will connect women and women's committee members with organizing.
  • To develop, plan and execute the National Women's Conference
  • To support all National Departments and Officers upon request
  • To support and help plan Regional Women's Conferences through the Regional Liaisons
  • Integrate HR tasks naturally, oversee recruitment processes and onboarding procedures
  • Include management duties, lead cross-functional teams to achieve departmental goals
  • Experience managing union employees preferred

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS

  • Strong project management skills to manage projects effectively, including planning, execution, monitoring, dealing with any project changes or issues that arise, implementing effective solutions.
  • Ability to proactively network and establish positive working relationships, with internal departments, UAW members, and external vendors.
  • Positive attitude with excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate with individuals of diverse backgrounds and emotional states as well as experience working with the public.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks within a high-pressure environment and meet unpredictable deadlines.
  • Ability to adjust and adapt quickly to unexpected changes.
  • Commitment to confidentiality and discretion.
  • Demonstrated strong proofreading skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Highly motivated and a self-starter.
  • Ability to learn department specific software (training will be provided).
  • Specific HR competencies like talent acquisition, performance management, employee relations, and compliance knowledge.
  • Management skills such as team leadership, strategic planning, conflict resolution, and budget management

Note: This position is a full in-office role which can include occasional travel to support the department as needed.
