Job Summary:
The English Language Development Teacher provides English language instruction to multilingual learners. The ELD teacher also shares the responsibility with the mainstream general education teachers to ensure the students they serve receive content instruction while learning English. The ELD supports classroom instruction through collaboration with the general education teachers. The English Language Development Teacher works closely with students, their families, and other education professionals to develop and implement language-rich interventions that address students’ language learning needs and improve their English proficiency. Your role is crucial in helping students with limited English proficiency develop their skills and achieve academic success.
Qualifications:
Michigan Full or Temporary approval as an ESL Teacher with the following requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree
- Teaching Certification: Possess a valid Michigan teaching certification with an NS endorsement in the K-12 grade settings.
- Teacher of English Learners Experience: Prior experience developing and implementing a program to support students who are English learners at all levels of proficiency, and assisting them and their families with understanding the American education system.
- Knowledge of English Language Development: Familiarity with best practices to support and teach students the English language. Understanding of state and federal expectations of English language development programs.
- Differentiated Instruction: Possess a strong understanding of differentiated instruction strategies, including the ability to modify curriculum, instructional materials, and teaching methods to meet the diverse learning needs of students learning English.
- Communication and Collaboration Skills: Excellent communication skills are necessary to collaborate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and other stakeholders. Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to work as part of a team.
- Patience and Adaptability: Display patience and flexibility
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement English Education Program at all instructional levels:
- Plan and Deliver Instruction: Create and implement effective instructional strategies and accommodations to meet the diverse needs of English learning students. Adapt curriculum materials and teaching techniques to ensure accessibility and meaningful learning experiences.
- Assess and Monitor Student Progress: Regularly assess students’ academic and functional abilities, track their progress, and modify instructional strategies as needed. Use a variety of assessment tools and techniques to measure student performance and provide feedback to students and parents.
- Provide Individual, Small-Group, and Whole Class Instruction: Work closely with students to provide targeted instruction and support. Address students’ specific challenges, reinforce concepts, and develop their skills in academic subjects and English language development.
- Collaborate with General Education Teachers: Coordinate with general education teachers to ensure effective inclusion and support for students learning English in all classrooms. Provide guidance and resources to help general education teachers differentiate instruction and accommodate English learners.
- Establish a Supportive Classroom Environment: Create a safe and inclusive classroom environment that promotes positive behavior, self-advocacy, and student engagement. Implement behavior management strategies and support students in developing appropriate language skills.
- Communicate with General Education teachers and families: Maintain regular communication with general education teachers, parents, and guardians regarding students’ progress, achievements, and areas of concern. Collaborate with general education teachers, families, school administrators, and support staff to address students’ individual needs and provide necessary resources.
- Attend Professional Development and Meetings: Stay up to date with best practices in bilingual education, attend professional development sessions, and participate in team meetings, IEP meetings, and other school-related activities as required.
- Develop and Grow Program: Work with administrators and other stakeholders to develop and grow a successful program for students who are English language learners.
Other Job Responsibilities:
- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of the students
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and the community
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in written and oral form.
