Senior Accountant (Non-Profit)

Finance Department

Job Summary

The Senior Accountant reports to the Director of Accounting and is responsible for supporting departmental activities with a focus on maintaining accurate financial records in accordance with GAAP and applicable ASC guidance. This role includes responsibility for general ledger activity, account reconciliations, variance analysis, and financial reporting, as well as budgeting and forecasting support.

The Senior Accountant also plays a key role in grant accounting, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and private funding requirements. This includes tracking grant expenditures, preparing financial reports, and ensuring costs are allowable, allocable, and properly documented.

The ideal candidate can communicate financial information clearly to both financial and non-financial audiences and demonstrates strong analytical and organizational skills.

Principal Accountabilities

Accounting & Grant Management

  • Prepare and post journal entries; assist with month-end and year-end close processes
  • Manage and record the allocation schedules for grant-funded staff
  • Record, reconcile, and prepare monthly financial reports, including grant/fund revenues, expenses, accounts receivable, liabilities, and net assets
  • Allocate expenditures across multiple funding sources in compliance with grant agreements and restricted contributions
  • Track grant expenditures against grant budgets and prepare financial reports/packages for grantors and program directors

  • Assist in revenue recognition, including grant receivables and ASC 958 compliance
  • Ensure compliance with grant requirements, including federal regulations (e.g., 2 CFR 200 Uniform Guidance)

Cash Management

  • Perform monthly reconciliations of all bank accounts

  • Support cash flow monitoring related to grant funding and reimbursements

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Assist in the development and monitoring of the annual operating budget
  • Assist with grant budgets and grant budget modifications

Compliance & Reconciliations

  • Reconcile a wide variety of financial data to maintain accurate balances and ensure compliance with accounting standards and internal policies

Audit Support

  • Assist with annual financial audits by preparing, verifying, and balancing audit workpapers
  • Provide documentation and support for grant-related audits

Training & Support

  • Provide backup support for accounting team functions as needed
  • Participate in required trainings and support continuous improvement efforts

Financial Controls & Accuracy

  • Assist in developing and maintaining accounting policies and procedures
  • Maintain a high level of attention to detail and proactively resolve accounting discrepancies

Other Duties

  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment
  • Strong experience with cost allocations in a nonprofit environment
  • Experience with financial management, compliance, and reporting of grant-funded programs
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and general ledger accounting

Minimum Competencies

Skills

  • Technology: Experience with Sage Intacct or similar cloud-based ERP systems and advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, XLOOKUP, basic financial modeling)
  • Analytical Thinking: Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Time Management: Ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines effectively

Preferred Qualifications

  • Nonprofit accounting experience
  • Experience with government and foundation grants
  • Familiarity with federal grant compliance (e.g., Uniform Guidance / 2 CFR 200)
