Staff Engineering Technician – Civil/Substation Design
Location: Overland Park, KS – Houston, TX – Ann Arbor, MI
Work Arrangement: Onsite, 5 days per week (local candidates only)
Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire
Schedule: Full-Time, 40 hours per week
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Staff Engineering Technician to support civil design and drafting efforts for electrical substation and grid infrastructure projects. This role will focus on the development of site drainage, grading, and utility plans using Autodesk Civil 3D and/or Bentley MicroStation .
The ideal candidate will have strong technical drafting skills, advanced Civil 3D experience, and prior exposure to substation or utility-related projects. This position works closely with engineering and design teams to produce high-quality technical deliverables in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities

Develop and modify technical drawings and design deliverables for civil/site components of substation projects

Create site grading, drainage, and utility plans using Autodesk Civil 3D and/or MicroStation

Support engineering teams in producing accurate construction documents and project packages

Utilize CAD, BIM, and 3D modeling tools to prepare and maintain technical documentation

Apply established engineering standards, codes, and design practices

Perform design calculations, material quantity takeoffs, and estimates

Review project requirements and ensure deliverables meet applicable codes and standards

Coordinate with multidisciplinary design teams to exchange project information

Assist with document control processes and quality assurance reviews

Provide technical guidance to junior technicians as needed

Support field activities and plant start-up efforts when required
Required Skills & Experience
-
Advanced experience with Autodesk Civil 3D – including proposed grading surfaces and civil plan development

Prior experience supporting electrical grid or substation projects

Strong understanding of civil design principles, standards, and construction documentation

Ability to interpret engineering inputs and translate them into accurate technical drawings

Experience with MicroStation is a plus

Knowledge of CAD standards, document control, and design workflows

Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet project schedules

Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
Minimum Qualifications
-
Minimum 5 years of related engineering technician or civil design experience

Diploma or certificate in drafting, design, or related field required

Associate Degree in Drafting, Engineering Design, or related technology preferred

Ability to pass pre-employment screening, including background check and drug screening
