Huron Valley Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO

Field Coordinator

For covering Washtenaw, Livingston, Jackson, and Hillsdale counties, MI

The Huron Valley Area Labor Federation (HVALF), AFL-CIO, is a regional body representing 35 union locals and more than 21,000 workers across Washtenaw, Livingston, Jackson, and Hillsdale counties. Guided by the values of democracy, solidarity, equity, and justice, we work to build a strong, inclusive labor movement rooted in worker leadership. HVALF is a member-led organization with an elected Executive Board, a Delegate Body from affiliated locals, and active committees where most of our organizing, political, and campaign work takes place. We are organizing in a moment when worker rights, public services, and democratic institutions are under unprecedented attack. Strong regional labor power is crucial, and staff help make that possible by supporting organizing and coordination across unions and by working with labor and community partners, including the Huron Valley Worker Center (HV-WORC).

Role & Responsibilities
The Field Coordinator strengthens participation within HVALF’s affiliated unions, committees, and delegate structures. The role centers on building relationships with union members, supporting emerging leaders, and helping internal teams function effectively. The Field Coordinator works closely with our Communications Coordinator/Field Organizer, who leads external outreach and communications. Both report directly to the HVALF President. Key Responsibilities include:

Organizing & Member Engagement

  • Build strong relationships with delegates, stewards, and members
  • Hold one-on-one conversations to identify issues, recruit members, and support leadership development
  • Coach emerging leaders with consistent follow-up

Committee & Delegate Support

  • Coordinate assigned committees, including agendas, reminders, and follow-up
  • Support delegate meetings and internal democratic processes
  • Maintain clear communication among committees, delegates, and leadership

Mobilization & Action Coordination

  • Support turnout and logistics for rallies, direct actions, trainings, and public events
  • Mobilize union members during rapid-response moments
  • Ensure internal outreach aligns with external communications and partner efforts

Internal Systems & Administration

  • Maintain accurate internal lists, records, and tracking systems
  • Provide consistent follow-up after meetings and events
  • Submit weekly activity updates to the HVALF President

Collaboration with HV-WORC & Partners

  • Support union member participation in joint solidarity efforts
  • Connect union members to campaigns involving non-union and community-based workers

Qualifications & Compensation
You don’t need prior union staff experience, but you do need a strong organizing foundation. We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has real experience organizing (labor, community, political, campus, or issue-based)
  • Builds trust easily, communicates well across differences, and follows up reliably
  • Enjoys supporting worker-leaders and helping people find their role in collective work
  • Stays organized, manages details, and juggles multiple priorities
  • Has a demonstrated commitment to racial, economic, and gender justice
  • Can work some evenings and weekends as needed by members
  • Has a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

The salary range for this position is $55,000 – $65,000. Experienced candidates may negotiate for a reduced work schedule. HVALF offers pay options to support healthcare needs, flexible scheduling with comp time, paid holidays and leave, mileage reimbursement, and unique opportunities for training and development within the labor movement.

How to Apply
Send the following to [email protected] with the subject line “ Field Coordinator Job Application – [Your Name]”:

  • Résumé
  • Cover letter (1 page) describing your relevant experience and interest in the role
  • 1–2 paragraphs answering: “In your own words, what is your definition of power? How do workers build it?”

We will begin reviewing applications on December 15 and will continue on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

Equal Opportunity
HVALF is an equal opportunity employer. We strongly encourage applications from women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, immigrant, and working-class people.
