Clerk of Court (Custody/Civil)
GENERAL STATEMENT:
The Family Court Clerk handles all duties that fall under Child Support Clerk and
Juvenile Court Clerk. Helping the general public in filing complaints. Keeping an organized
schedule and maintaining monthly calendars.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
? The Family Court Clerk will be responsible for all documents and cases
pertaining to child support and juvenile court cases. Employee will be expected to
work in a high demand, quick paced work environment while keeping a high level
of confidentiality.
? Render basic assistance to the general public in filing custody and civil documents
procedures (cannot give legal advice).
? Schedule and maintain monthly calendars custody cases.
? Maintain the family court custody docket containing names of all parties involved
in the cases.
? Cross trained for all areas in the clerk division.
? Other duties as assigned.
CHILD SUPPORT CLERK
? Renders assistance to the general public in filing civil complaints pertaining to child
support issues, petitions filed for Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) cases, divorces, child
support, subpoenas, and other documents necessary to the function of the court and issue
general advice regarding court procedures.
? Schedule and maintain monthly calendars for civil cases after consulting the court
administrator.
? Maintains the civil docket containing names of the plaintiff(s) and defendant(s), type of
civil action, summons, service date, court hearing, judgment, appeals and all other
relevant information.
? Monitors all judgment issues and maintains a system for compliance of reimbursement
payments; reports non-compliance , and files complaints.
? Shall be responsible for the completion of all documents that need to be filed with the
State of Wyoming; i.e. adoption, name change, dissolution of marriage, and insure that
these documents are filed with the Wyoming Department of Health and Vital Records,
and the Shoshone and Arapaho Enrollment offices.
? Maintains a system for receiving, docketing and scheduling of all civil appeals. Shall be
responsible for assuring appeals are processed in a timely manner.
? Shall be the appellate clerk for all appeals; i.e., notice of appeal obtaining appeal
judges, recording hearing, typing orders, etc.
? Maintain a filing system for civil court, drafting of forms for civil court; safekeeping of
all civil court files.
JUVENILE COURT CLERK:
? Renders assistance to law enforcement officers and to residents of the Wind River Indian
Reservation in drafting juvenile petitions, subpoenas, warrants of arrest and other
documents necessary to the functions of the juvenile court and issue general advice
regarding court procedures.
? Will schedule and maintain monthly calendars of the juvenile docket, read petitions and
administer oaths.
? Will keep a juvenile docket containing the name of each plaintiff and defendant in any
juvenile criminal proceeding, the character of the proceedings, the date of issuance and
the return date of any process issued, the appearance of default of parties summoned, the
date and amount of judgment, fine or any other relevant documents.
? Monitors fines, warrants, arraignments and trials.
? Maintain a record of fines owed and send notices of unpaid fines and restitution owed.
Notify proper authorities when in default.
? Prepare warrants to apprehend, notices to appear and maintain a warrant list ensuring it is
up-to-date.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
? Must be proficient in MS office applications and database software and have general
office skills.
? Proficient in internet research activities
? Have a good understanding of policies and procedures of the Shoshone and Arapaho Law
and Order Code
? Must possess the ability to meet and deal effectively with the general public and
representatives from otheragencies.
? Must possess or acquire a general knowledge of legal terminology, format and
procedures.
? Must work well with others and possess a willingness to assist others.
? Must possess the basic knowledge of procedures of the tribal court structure.
? Must possess the ability to follow verbal and written instructions and meet deadlines.
? Must be able to maintain a steady job attendance, accuracy in accomplishing work and
perform duties in a timely manner.
? Must be able to maintain high confidentiality of the office and matters within the court.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
? Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent, or an AA degree in a related field
or three (3) years of general office experience
? Must have excellent filing and computer skills
? Knowledge of Full Court Software (Judicial Software) would be beneficial
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
? Must be 21 years of age at the time of hire and of good moral character
? Will be subject to a background check investigation to include work and criminal history
? Will be subject to a drug screening prior to employment and must test negatively for use
of any illegal substances
? Must never have been convicted of a felony; or a misdemeanor within one (1) year of
applying for position
? Has not received a dishonorable discharge for the Armed Forces of the United States of
America
? Will be subject to a work environment with a high area of flow in court documents, and
the incumbent must have the ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks
with little or no supervision at times.
? Must be dependable in following through on work assignments, and be dependable and
reliable in attendance and productivity.
? Must deal with the public and staff in a positive and objective manner
? Must maintain the utmost confidentiality with court documents and sign confidentiality
agreements.
? ***Employees found to be in breach of confidentiality will be subject to grounds for
disciplinary action and/or termination.
? Must possess a valid driver license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
? The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an
employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable
accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the
essential functions. Duties require only light physical demands characterized by sitting
50% of the time, walking, standing, reaching, occasional lifting of light objects and otherminor physical activities.
? Overall direction is received from the Court Administrator.
HUMAN CONTACT SKILL:
? Contacts with the public are frequent and often under circumstances of stress involving
uncooperative or hostile individuals. Requires knowledge and application of appropriate
oral communication and human relation techniques.
? The majority of work is performed in the court offices, and with the public.
REQUIREMENT:
Must pass a pre-employment drug test. Must pass a background check. Must have a valid
driver's license. Must maintain strict confidentiality. Preference will be given to enrolled Eastern
Shoshone and Northern Arapaho members.
