Position Summary

The Michigan State University-Hurley Childrens Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative ( in the C.S. Mott Department of Public Health at Michigan State University invites applications for the position of Research Technologist II. This position will be based in Flint Michigan.

The overall mission of the Pediatric Public Health Initiative (PPHI) is to improve the outcomes of Flint children. Through clinical and community programs partnerships advocacy training and evaluation the Pediatric Public Health Initiative strives for health equity and serves as a national resource for best practices.

The Research Technologist II will work with the Rx Kids research study team. Rx Kids ( is the first community-wide unconditional cash prescription program in the United States. This multi-million-dollar public health research intervention aims to eliminate infant poverty and evaluate the health impact of expanding Rx Kids as the new social contract for how society should take care of families. The research team is focused on the impact of Rx Kids on maternal and infant health families basic needs/economic stability process/service utilization community-level impact and systems change.

The Research Technologist II recruits research participants collects data for research studies analyzes results and assists in composing reports in order to provide support in the completion of research projects. Research or quality improvement activities occur at the MSU Flint location and/or at local medical clinics or hospitals.

Activities independently led or supported by the Research Technologist II include:
Recruit track and follow up with study participants;
Collect data from research participants (e.g. surveys interviews assessments biospecimen collection) to support research objectives;
Organize and track biospecimen collection materials or other study materials
Analyze data and accurately document research methods procedures and results in order to assist principal investigators;
Conduct preliminary checks to ensure research methods are following protocol and data are accurate;
Assists in compiling test results and preparing information for reports presentations and publications;
Other research or project activities to support work as applicable

The successful candidate will be a self-starter have the ability to work collaboratively and to take direction and have strong written and verbal communication skills with internal and external partners. The candidate must be organized efficient responsive to feedback professional and trustworthy.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge normally acquired by completing a four- year college degree program in Public Health or other related field; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience performing basic research techniques specific to the area of research employment such as: Tissue Culture Analytical Research Molecular Biology Agriculture Social Science Physiology Medical Research etc. including the use and calibration of related equipment; word processing spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Experience recruiting and collecting data from parents with infants; trained in biospecimen collection; training in qualitative interviews; trained in survey data collection; comfortable making phone calls for study recruitment; excellent oral and written skills with the ability to write and conduct daily communications; high level of comfort with development of documents spreadsheets and presentations; able to work independently in an organized and efficient manner; pays attention to detail; self-starter; highly self-motivated; adept at working in large interdisciplinary teams; quick learner and high sense of responsibility and honesty; and experience working with underserved families from culturally and economically diverse populations.
