Job Purpose
The Safety Assistant plays a critical role in supporting the organization’s commitment to maintaining a safe and compliant work environment. This role involves assisting in the implementation of safety programs, conducting inspections, identifying workplace hazards, and promoting adherence to occupational health and safety standards. The Safety Assistant will work closely with the HR Supervisor and cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA standards, while fostering a culture of safety across the organization. This position will also act as a backup for other administrative tasks within the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Safety Inspections & Hazard Identification: Conduct routine workplace inspections to identify potential hazards, unsafe conditions, or non-compliance with safety protocols. Document findings and recommend corrective actions.
- Regulatory Compliance: Assist in ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other relevant safety regulations. Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and training activities.
- Training & Awareness: Support the development and delivery of safety training programs for employees, including topics such as proper equipment use, emergency procedures, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
- Incident Reporting & Investigation: Assist in documenting workplace accidents, injuries, or near-misses. Support investigations to determine root causes and recommend preventive measures.
- Emergency Preparedness: Help maintain and update emergency response plans. Participate in organizing drills and ensuring readiness for fire, medical, or other emergencies.
- Safety Program Support: Aid in the implementation and monitoring of safety policies, procedures, and programs. Distribute safety materials and communicate updates to employees.
- Equipment & PPE Maintenance: Monitor the condition and availability of safety equipment and PPE, ensuring proper use and maintenance.
- Data Management: Maintain safety records, including inspection logs, training certifications, and incident reports, ensuring accuracy and accessibility for audits or reviews.
- Collaboration: Work with supervisors, employees, and external vendors to address safety concerns and promote a proactive safety culture.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; an associate or bachelor’s degree in occupational health, safety, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience: 1-2 years of experience in a safety-related role or similar position preferred; entry-level candidates with relevant training or certifications will be considered.
- OSHA 10/30-hour certification or equivalent safety training is a plus. First Aid/CPR certification is desirable.
- Strong skills in Microsoft Office suite.
- Excellent communication and people skills, with an emphasis on customer service.
Working Conditions
The Safety Assistant will work in both office and production floor settings for a manufacturing facility with some exposure to hazardous conditions (e.g., noise, chemicals, or heavy machinery) with appropriate safety measures in place. Works at a desk and a computer screen for extended periods of time. Frequently lifting and carrying up to 10 lbs and occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs. Use of both hands to hold, lift and handle materials. Occasional climbing, bending and squatting.
