Job Summary

Under indirect and intermittent supervision of Area Leader and when assigned the work directions from Senior District Mechanic A & B, adjust, repair, replaces or overhauls auto, truck, and mobile equipment; engines of gas, diesel and alternative fuels (propane, electric, etc.), transmissions, transfer cases, clutches, axles, suspension, steering, and brake assemblies, ignition, hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, computerized and electrical systems, drive lines, etc. Operates, checks, repairs and road tests autos, trucks, trailers and hydraulically, mechanically and electrically operated mobile equipment.  Makes road service calls and field repairs. Works from computers, schematics, manuals, parts catalogues, oral or written information. Uses test equipment, instruments, and hand tools. Designs, fabricates special body compartments, doors, window frames, etc.; and uses various welding and cutting equipment.  Trains, directs, and checks work of Assigned Mechanic Apprentices or Mechanics in progression. Furnishes own tools.

Key Accountabilities

  • Disassemble, assemble, adjust, repair, replace overhaul, operate and test auto, truck and mobile equipment; engines of gas, diesel and alternative fuels (propane, electric, etc.), transmissions; (manual, automatic and computer controlled), clutches, front and rear axles, lift and tag type axles, power dividers, power takeoffs, transverse mount engines and transmissions, power, dual and standard steering assemblies, air, air over hydraulic, electric, electric power boost, ABS, vacuum and standard hydraulic brake systems, ignition (standard, electronic and computer controlled), fuel, electrical, lubricating and cooling systems, drive shafts, universal joints, pumps, lines, pistons, rings, valves, shafts, springs, wheels, mufflers, exhaust and tail pipes, bumpers, etc.  repair or replace trailer axles, braking assemblies, electrical circuits, lights, wheels, hangers, hitches, gates, springs, torsion bars, etc.
  • Test, operate, analyst and repair mobile equipment, AC/DC generators, dynamic invertors, hydraulic and belt driven generators, power converters, fiber optic systems control, lights, wiring, etc., (up to approximately 240 volts & 100,000 DC Volts)
  • Make periodic, regular and Annual D.O.T. inspections on trucks, trailers, automobiles, trenchers, backhoes, rope tensioners, duct rodders, cable pullers, reel transfer truck, fuel tankers, waste tankers, diesel engines, hydraulically, mechanically and/or electrically operated cranes, booms, aerial towers, platforms, diggers, earth boring equipment, bulldozers, air compressors, forklifts, end loaders, etc. Operates, tests or assists in tests of equipment on company property or on public roads. Performs annual load and electric tests on cranes, winches, bucket liners, and aerial equipment Performs O.E.M. maintenance and warranty test procedures and repairs. Write up and Recommend needed repairs. Check work performed by contractors or vendors
  • Maintain, overhaul and service diesel engines.  Check fuel pumps, injectors, and injector racks for timing and control of fuel, engines for compression, lines for leaks, etc. Diagnosis and repairs computer controlled fue1 and air induction (supercharger, turbocharger, etc.) systems. Replaces fuel injectors, pumps, pistons, rings, filters, fittings, lines, etc. Follows up and checks vendors work
  • Bump out and or straighten fenders, doors, bodies, bumpers, auger shafts, springs, grills, frames, etc. (minor work only). Designs, lays out, modifies, repairs and fabricates special body compartments, doors, window frames, steps, grab irons, and gas welding techniques. Solders using conventional and silver solder methods. Burns using oxygen-acetylene and air arc methods. Preps and paints steel, aluminum and fiberglass surfaces.
  • Works from computers, schematics, blueprints, manuals, catalogues, component locator guides, oral or written information, etc. Uses ohm meters and AC/DC test equipment. Uses dynamometer, sand blaster, lathe, drill press, reamers, ring compressors, hydraulic presses, flow and pressure gauges, honers and lappers, soldering irons, jacks, power drills, grinders, wrenches, screwdrivers, hammers, feeler gauges, micrometers, air powered tools, etc.
  • Makes road service calls and field repairs. Drives automobiles or trucks carrying parts, tools, test equipment, etc. Writes repair orders, prepares time sheets, parts requisitions, calls, locates and picks up parts, etc. Drives and operates wrecker unit.
  • Trains, directs and checks of assigned mechanic apprentices or other automotive mechanics in progression and contract utility personnel.

Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Journeyman Automotive Mechanic by having completed the company's Automotive Mechanic Apprentice Program or have four years of a full time documented Automotive Mechanic experience in engines, transmissions, suspensions, electrical systems and brakes or completion of an Automotive Technology program at a college, university, community college, or trade school that is recognized by the Detroit Edison Company, plus two to three years of documented Automotive experience.
  • Able to understand written and oral instructions.
  • Meet Company driving standards. Must possess or obtain prior to transfer date, a Group "A" Commercial Driver's License with air brake or a Classified Endorsement Temporary Instruction Permit to operate a Group "A" vehicle with air brakes. Canadian citizens must obtain an Ontario Class "A" license with a "Z" endorsement for air brakes. Drivers with the Classified Endorsement Temporary Instruction Permit must obtain a Group "A" Commercial Driver's License as soon as they are certified by EMPLOYEE Training.
  • Have to take the Construction and Skilled Trades test (CAST) and attain a "Recommended" score. (Exception: if you are an incumbent and/or changing location, or have previously taken and passed the Construction and Skilled Trades test.   • Satisfactory physical examination
  • Other Requirements:  Furnishes own basic hand tools up to 1-1/2"
