(Full-Time) Park Maintenance Worker/Specialist

SALARY RANGE:  $54,954 – $74,942 annually DOQ

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the District Park Maintenance Manager, Park Maintenance Supervisor and/or Golf Course Maintenance Supervisor, work activities in this position primarily involve performing unskilled and skilled labor in connection with the maintenance of buildings, structures, grounds, construction and development of parks, utilities, roads and special facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs to park buildings, facilities, and related infrastructure.

  • Diagnose, maintain, and repair plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanical, and other building systems.

  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair swimming pools, splash pads, filtration systems, pumps, chemical feed systems, and related equipment; monitor water quality and maintain required records to ensure compliance with applicable regulations

  • Perform skilled carpentry and general building repairs to park buildings and public-use structures, including constructing, repairing, and installing doors, cabinetry, counters, partitions, flooring, trim, and related building components.

  • Repair and maintain park infrastructure, including fences, gates, walls, sidewalks, shelters, and other structural features using appropriate carpentry and masonry techniques.

  • Perform preventative maintenance and inspect buildings, equipment, and infrastructure to identify maintenance needs, safety concerns, and repair priorities; recommend corrective actions and improvements.

  • Maintain preventative maintenance schedules, work orders, inspection records, and repair documentation; prepare reports and make recommendations to supervisors regarding maintenance needs, repairs, and facility improvements..

  • Assist with facility renovations, remodeling projects, and emergency repairs as needed.

  • Operate vehicles, lifts, power tools, testing equipment, and other equipment necessary to perform assigned duties safely and effectively.

  • Perform snow and ice removal around buildings, sidewalks, and other public access areas to maintain safe conditions.

  • Train and provide guidance to seasonal and provisional maintenance employees.

  • Follow established safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulations while performing assigned duties.

  • Employees shall perform other duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Duties

  • Serve on committees as requested.

  • Assist with park operations and special events as needed.

  • May assist park operations with special events.

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Park Maintenance Worker – Level 04

  • Associate Degree or four years of related experience for Worker Level 04.

  • Must maintain a valid Michigan driver's license and an acceptable driving record.

  • Possession of Pesticide Applicator License (PAL) including core and categories 3A, 3B and 6 or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.

  • Possession of a Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL–A w/Air) or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.

  • Possession of an Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – Park Maintenance Specialist – Level 06

  • Meets all of the minimum qualifications of the Park Maintenance Worker – Level 04.

  • Ten years of related experience for Specialist Level 06.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Preferred knowledge of materials, tools, equipment practices, and methods used in building maintenance and repair.

  • Preferred knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanical, and building systems.

  • Preferred knowledge of preventative maintenance practices, facility inspections, and repair procedures.

  • Preferred knowledge of aquatic facility operations, including pool and splash pad systems, water chemistry, filtration systems, and applicable safety regulations.

  • Preferred knowledge of workplace hazards, preventative safety measures, and applicable OSHA/MIOSHA regulations.

  • Knowledge of laws and ordinances regulating the operation of motor vehicles.

  • Skill in diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining building systems and equipment.

  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of hand tools, power tools, vehicles, lifts, testing equipment, and other maintenance equipment.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, equipment specifications, blueprints, and schematics.

  • Ability to maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and communicate maintenance needs and recommendations effectively.

  • Ability to supervise, train, and provide direction to seasonal and provisional employees.

  • Ability to stand, stoop, bend, climb, and perform physical activities for extended periods; ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and respond to emergency maintenance situations as needed.

  • Ability to traverse sandy, marshy or wooded areas with even or uneven terrain.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including the use of telephone, radio equipment, and computers.

  • Must be available by phone to respond to on-call issues requiring immediate resolution.

  • May be required to adjust schedule to meet organizational needs, including special events, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Tools, Equipment and Hardware Requirements

  • This position utilizes a variety of hand and power tools; lawn mowers and landscaping equipment; trucks, tractors, and other light- and heavy-duty equipment. The role also requires the use of telephones, two-way radios, and standard office equipment including copiers and fax machines. A computer and related software applications are used, including financial, accounting, payroll, database, scheduling, publishing, spreadsheet, and word processing programs.
