Maintenance Technician - Temporary

Cornerstone University
Grand Rapids, MI

Cornerstone University is looking for a full-time, hourly maintenance technician to fill a temporary need in our department, located on our beautiful campus in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Do you like to get your hands dirty, and occasionally the rest of yourself as well? Are you skilled at taking things apart (easy), putting them back together (harder), making them work (harder yet), and making them last (bonus!)? If so, we have a place for you!

The Maintenance Tech is a self-starter responsible for general repairs, routine inspections, and preventative maintenance procedures. This position works closely with other Maintenance Team members to effectively and efficiently maintain buildings, systems, components, and properties.

This is an entry-level position where aptitude is worth as much as experience. We have a campus of many quirks, so a large amount of on-the-job training will be expected for any candidate. There are also opportunities to expand and tailor the role based on performance and interest level. The core of Cornerstone University is defined and driven by its Christ-centered mission and Biblical confession.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform general maintenance tasks as simple as clearing drains or replacing lights, but also more in-depth plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and carpentry work (as time, training, and talent allow).
  • Regularly inspect buildings, equipment, and systems to identify and resolve issues.
  • · Work with Maintenance Team and appropriate vendors/contractors to plan and schedule repairs as needed.
  • · Work with supervisor to develop, implement, and maintain preventative maintenance schedules and procedures.
  • · Conduct periodic quality checks on equipment and systems to ensure proper functionality.
  • · Effectively communicate status and progress updates to supervisor.
  • · Assist in departmental projects as assigned.
  • · Work safely and efficiently while unsupervised.
  • · Share responsibility for being on-call, including periodic nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • · Inventory and order materials as needed.
  • All Cornerstone University employees will regularly interact with students in a variety of projects, activities, and settings. As such all employees are expected to serve as Christian leaders and mentors by effectively living a gospel-centered lifestyle, ministering and discipling through a biblical worldview.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in building maintenance or general trades preferred.
  • Mechanical, electrical and plumbing experience are preferred.
  • Trade program certifications are not required but beneficial.
  • Excellent and proven communication skills and ability to work unsupervised.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Indoor and outdoor work in heat and dusty conditions.
  • Standing, walking, handling (constantly).
  • Pushing, pulling, reaching (frequently).
  • Climbing, squatting, kneeling, bending (frequently).
  • Lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. (frequently).
  • Lifting/carrying up to 100 lbs. (occasionally).

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A personal relationship with Jesus Christ and an active Christian commitment.
  • A theology that supports the values and mission of Cornerstone University core commitments evidenced by an ability to affirm and sign the university’s doctrinal statement, “The Cornerstone Confession.”
  • Four other foundational pillars, along with the university’s mission and confession, form Cornerstone’s Core Commitments.
    • The Cornerstone Christian World View
    • The Cornerstone Academic Vision
    • The Cornerstone Beautiful Christian Community
    • The Marriage and Human Sexuality Position Statement

These core commitments convey who we are, what we believe and how we live and work together in community. Employees are expected to faithfully attend an evangelical and biblical church whose core beliefs and practices are consistent with Cornerstone’s confession and core commitments.
