Environmental Attorney (4–6+ Years)

A highly respected regional law firm with a strong environmental practice serving public and private sector clients throughout the Midwest are seeking an Environmental Attorney with 4–6+ years of experience to join their team.

This role offers the opportunity to advise on complex environmental issues, manage client relationships, contribute to business development and work collaboratively with a highly regarded team of attorneys and professionals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise clients on environmental permitting, regulatory compliance, enforcement actions, and remediation requirements.
  • Draft and negotiate environmental agreements, contracts, and other transactional documents.
  • Prepare legal memoranda, briefs, motions, discovery responses, and regulatory submissions.
  • Conduct research and analysis of federal, state, and local environmental, land use, and administrative laws and regulations.
  • Represent clients in administrative proceedings, regulatory matters, and litigation.
  • Manage and supervise document review, discovery processes, and case development.
  • Support clients in environmental aspects of business transactions, development projects, facility siting, and operational matters.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships and participate in business development initiatives.

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the Michigan Bar, or eligibility for admission by the anticipated start date.
  • 4–6+ years of experience practicing environmental and land use law.
  • Experience advising clients on federal and state environmental regulatory requirements, including one or more of the following:
  • CERCLA
  • RCRA
  • Clean Water Act (CWA)
  • Clean Air Act (CAA)
  • TSCA
  • FIFRA
  • State environmental regulatory programs
  • Experience supporting environmental aspects of transactions, development projects, permitting, compliance, enforcement, remediation, or litigation matters.
  • Experience representing public and/or private sector clients is preferred.
  • Portable book of business preferred.

Preferred Experience

Candidates may have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Environmental due diligence and liability management in mergers, acquisitions, and asset transfers.
  • Industrial, waste management, renewable energy, energy storage, or natural gas facility permitting and development.
  • Hazardous waste cleanup, remediation, and environmental insurance matters.
  • Administrative and judicial litigation, including motions practice, discovery, depositions, and evidentiary proceedings.
  • Solid and hazardous waste facility regulatory matters.
