Legal Assistant
PURPOSE Work with parents through the paternity establishment process and provide administrative support to the Friend of the Court Legal Case Manager and Family Division Referees. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

- Review and evaluate court action referrals for required actions.
- Maintain files for establishment cases, such as appointment scheduling, data entry, and case progress.
- Research addresses and employment information and coordinate service of process.
- Process legal documents including forms generation, obtaining signatures, and mailing copies.
- Track locate cases and monitor timeliness to ensure compliance.
- Manage establishment client appointments.
- Monitor genetic test results and schedule out-of-state genetic testing.
- Generate reports and take action on cases, responding to system and case alerts.
- Communicate with parents, attorneys, the Michigan Office of Child Support, Department of Health and Human Services, other courts, and law enforcement offices.
- Process National Medical Support Notices, communicate with employers to calculate reasonable health insurance cost.
- Process Medical Demands and Requests for Insurance Coverage Information.
- Type orders after hearings, such as entry of a settlement, for referees. The legal case manager drafts establishment orders.
- Perform various clerical responsibilities.
- Able to work effectively with clients facing financial and emotional stress while maintaining neutrality and objectivity.
- Committed to providing unbiased customer service.
- Must comply with the Michigan Model Code of Conduct for Trial Court Employees.
- Willing to participate in ongoing training, both on-site and off-site.
- Employment is contingent on background check, criminal history, fingerprint check, and drug screen.
