First Merchants Bank is seeking a Director of Retirement Plan Services to join our team! The Director of Retirement Plan Services will lead the continued growth and delivery of our retirement plan business. This role is responsible for directly driving new business development across retirement plan offerings while also leading a dedicated service team focused on Plan Sponsor relationship management and Participant education and success.
As part of this role you will:
- Business Development & Growth
- Develop and execute a strategic sales plan to grow retirement plan assets under administration through acquisition of new Plan relationships and expansion of relationships with Plan participants
- Identify and cultivate new business opportunities through advisors, consultants, centers of influence, and industry events.
- Partner with internal teams (e.g., Wealth, Commercial Banking, Trust) to identify cross-sell opportunities and expand existing client relationships.
- Represent the firm in external forums and industry events to enhance visibility and market presence.
- Team Leadership & Client Service
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team responsible for Plan Sponsor relationship management and Participant education and engagement.
- Establish and maintain service standards that exceed client expectations and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with team members to deliver comprehensive education strategies that promote participant retirement readiness and plan success.
- Monitor team performance and ensure continuous improvement through coaching, development plans, and performance reviews.
- Operations & Compliance
- Oversee and coordinate with third-party partners on plan recordkeeping, administration, design, compliance, and reporting requirements in alignment with ERISA and fiduciary standards.
- Stay current on industry trends, regulatory changes, and product innovations to maintain competitive positioning.
- Ensure integration of technology and tools that enhance service delivery and client experience.
To be successful in this position, we require the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or related field OR an associate degree/two (2) years of college + two (2) years of related work/military experience OR four (4) years of related work/military experience (plus any additional required experience listed below).
- Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in retirement plan services.
- Minimum of three (3) years in a leadership role.
The following would be a plus:
- Advanced degree or relevant certification (e.g., QKA, AIF®, CFP®, or CEBS).
- Demonstrated track record in sales or business development within the retirement plan industry.
- Deep knowledge of ERISA, fiduciary standards, recordkeeping platforms, and participant engagement strategies.
- Strong interpersonal, presentation, and leadership skills with a client-first mindset.
- Ability to balance strategic thinking with day-to-day execution and team leadership.
