Technical Operations Support Specialist - Level 1 - Part time

The Technical Operations Support Specialist is a multifaceted and self-directed technician that provides installation, maintenance, and disposition support for academic equipment at GRCC. The technician will work in both office and educational lab environments.

Academic equipment includes electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electronic, and specialty items ranging from industrial machines (e.g. automotive lifts, plastic injection machines, mills, lathes) to commercial assets (e.g. hospital beds, dental chairs, and vehicles) to educational trainers (e.g. medical manikins and simulators). The technician must possess the technical skills required to assist with installing new equipment, trouble-shooting, repairing, and maintaining existing equipment. Additionally, excellent interpersonal skills to support faculty, staff, students, and external repair specialists are a must.

An effective technician is one who can skillfully work with equipment while serving as the first level of communication with several stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

General Responsibilities
  • Observing proper operation, maintenance, and safety procedures
  • Regular attendance during normally scheduled hours is required. Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Technician Responsibilities

  • Inspecting and maintaining complex mechanical, electrical, electronic, electro-mechanical, mechatronics, and automation equipment.
  • Modifying and repairing complex mechanical, electrical, electronics, electro-mechanical, mechatronics, and automation equipment under supervision.
  • Install or program computer hardware, or machine/ instrumentation software in microprocessor-based systems.
  • Operating vehicles, mechanized devices, or equipment.
  • Establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships.
  • Maintain inventories of department equipment and repair parts, order parts/supplies as required.
  • Inspect, operate, or test machinery and equipment to diagnose malfunctions under supervision .
  • Adjust functional parts of devices or control instruments.
  • Transport parts, tools, equipment, and other material between work areas and storage, using cranes, hoists, or dollies.
  • Dismantle machines and remove parts for repair, using hand tools, chain falls, jacks, cranes, or hoists under supervision .
  • Install, replace, or change parts and attachments using hand tools and precision instruments, according to technical requirements under supervision .
  • Reassemble and test equipment after repair or maintenance work under supervision .
  • Collaborate with other workers to repair or move machines, parts, or equipment.
  • Record production, repair, and machine maintenance information.
  • Lubricate or apply adhesives or other materials to machines, parts, or equipment according to technical requirements.
  • Collect and discard worn machine parts and other refuse to maintain machinery and work areas.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years experience with hands-on equipment installation and/or maintenance.
  • Military training and experience in technical and/or leadership roles welcomed (DOD COOL Job Family "Installation, Maintenance, and Repair").

Skills

  • Adaptability and Learning Agility - GRCC programs support a variety of fields, all of which require different levels of technical support. The Level 1 technician should be comfortable and capable of gaining sufficient expertise in any of these fields to support the technical needs of the project.
  • School of Business and Industry - Applied Technology, Automotive, Business, Criminal Justice, Manufacturing, Culinary
  • School of Health Sciences - Allied Health, Dental, Exercise Science, Nursing, Radiologic Technology, Occupational Therapy
  • School of STEM - Architectural and Mechanical Design, Computer Information Systems
  • Teamwork and Collaboration - The Level 1 technician will be expected to work with other technical staff to learn, and gain proficiency with their equipment. While Independence and Judgement is important, Teamwork and Collaboration is vital to accomplish a task safely and efficiently.
  • Soft Skills - Communication, teamwork, and coordination with stakeholders, vendors, contractors, supervisors, peers, and subordinates are vital components of the position.
  • Problem Solving and Critical Thinking - The Level 1 technician is the most likely person to find and experience technical problems during inspection and maintenance. This requires the ability to think beyond standard procedures and recognize when something is wrong. The Level 1 technician is expected to ask for help and guidance before resolving issues.
  • Independence and Judgment - The Level 1 technician is supported by the full team of technical experience at GRCC, but is expected to work with minimal supervision, manage their own time effectively, and maintain control over all responsibilities while requesting assistance early and often when required.
  • Technical Skills and Documentation - The Level 1 technician must have knowledge of hand tools, power tools, test equipment, and diagnostic tools (e.g. oscilloscopes, thermal imagers, micrometers) and be able to effectively document work plans, actions, and lessons learned.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to operate a computer in an office environment or navigate industrial/construction sites for an entire shift.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push or pull a variety of tools, equipment and materials, with or without accommodations.
  • Must be able to disassemble/reassemble equipment and remove/replace parts weighing up to 25 lbs without assistance.
  • Must be able to reach and manipulate hardware, tools, and components (e.g. switches, bolts, valves, hoses) within and around equipment.

Working Conditions

  • Will work alone the majority of the time.
  • Will be required to work on the main campus and any offsite locations.
  • Will work primarily in academic labs, in a workshop, or in an office.
  • May be required to work in an active construction site during special projects.
  • Will work with diverse and sometimes hazardous equipment.
  • Will work with hazardous substances and equipment (e.g. lubricants, solvents, and industrial equipment).
  • Must have the ability to travel between GRCC facilities, suppliers, hardware stores, etc.
