HOURS: 40 hours/week. Days, evenings, and some weekend shifts.

SALARY: $47,500/year

SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Head of Youth Services and Outreach, the Youth Services Librarian develops programs and services for children, tweens, and teens with a focus on the importance of reading and promotion of the library as a resource. Presents and leads a variety of programs, services, and activities for youth of all ages and their caregivers/parents. Provides reference and readers’ advisory for print, audio/visual, and online resources. Provides support to circulation staff and other staff as needed, including providing checkout of materials to patrons of all ages. Supports supervisors and other staff as needed to ensure that the library is running smoothly. Represents the library at school events and other community events for young families to promote library services and programs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Plans, prepares, and presents programs on-site and off-site for youth and young adults including story time, the summer reading program, teen and tween programs, and other youth programming

· Provides reference assistant and readers’ advisory to library patrons of all ages

· Develops and maintains positive relationships with community groups, homeschool families, city staff, and area schools to promote the library and support the needs of the community

· Maintains the youth programming budget

· Responsible for some collection development and budget management for those collections

· Under the direction of the Head of Youth Services and Outreach, manages library social media accounts

· Assists patrons at the circulation desk in-person, on the phone, and on social media as needed

· Knowledge of library policies and procedures

· Participates in staff meetings, TLN Youth and Teen Committee meetings, other professional meetings and continuing education workshops

· Acts as supervisor-in-charge one evening per week and one Saturday per month and as needed when Director and other department heads are out of the office

· Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited library school

· Eligible for Michigan Public Library Certification

· At least one year of experience in a public services position in a library or equivalent experience working with children in a school or daycare

· Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature and AV materials

· Skill in planning and presenting programs for children and young adults

· Computer literacy including use of social media, proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word and Google Docs required; experience with CARL or other library software, MS Publisher, and WordPress preferred

· Able to prioritize duties and tasks, work independently and assume responsibility

· Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relations with parents/caregivers, children, and teens

· Ability to operate standard office equipment

· Ability to provide superior customer service to library users of all ages

· Excellent proven organizational skills

· Ability to complete work in a timely manner

· Ability to manage a budget effectively

· Ability to work cooperatively with library staff and volunteers in a team environment

· Ability to produce neat, accurate work within an established time frame

· Excellent written and oral communication skills

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, policies and procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure documents. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, patrons, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret instructions and procedures.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Eligible for Michigan Public Library Certification

Must be appropriately licensed to operate city-owned vehicles consistent with work assignment.
