Position Overview

Saginaw Township Community Schools is seeking a strategic, execution-focused Director of Facilities to lead all aspects of district-wide facilities, infrastructure, and capital project delivery. This leadership role is responsible for ensuring all district facilities are safe, compliant, efficient, and aligned with instructional and operational priorities.

The Director will oversee maintenance, custodial services, grounds, safety systems, and capital improvements while driving long-range planning and operational excellence across all buildings and sites.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Facilities Planning

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive district-wide facilities master plan
  • Lead long-range capital planning, including sinking fund and bond initiatives
  • Conduct facility condition assessments and lifecycle planning
  • Advise district leadership on infrastructure, safety, and operational improvements

Capital Projects & Construction Management

  • Oversee all phases of construction and capital projects (planning through closeout)
  • Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, and timelines
  • Develop bid specifications and contract documents
  • Oversee contractor/vendor performance and compliance

Operations & Maintenance

  • Direct maintenance, custodial, and grounds operations across the district
  • Implement preventive maintenance programs and service standards
  • Ensure facilities support instructional programming, events, and community use
  • Coordinate contracted services (e.g., custodial, snow removal, lawn care)

Budgeting & Financial Management

  • Develop and manage operational and capital budgets in collaboration with and under the direction of the Director of Finance and Operations
  • Oversee procurement processes (RFPs, bids, contracts)
  • Monitor expenditures and implement cost-control strategies
  • Approve facilities-related purchase orders and invoices

Safety, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, including:
    • MIOSHA / OSHA
    • ADA / Barrier-Free requirements
    • Environmental (AHERA)
    • Fire and building codes
  • Serve as AHERA Designated Person
  • Oversee inspections and safety systems
  • Lead emergency preparedness and risk mitigation efforts

Energy Management & Sustainability

  • Oversee HVAC systems and energy management programs
  • Implement sustainability and efficiency initiatives
  • Monitor system performance and recommend improvements

Leadership & Team Management

  • Supervise facilities, maintenance, and custodial staff
  • Lead hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluations
  • Promote a culture of accountability and continuous improvement

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as liaison to district leadership, Board of Education, and community
  • Collaborate with building administrators on facility needs
  • Maintain relationships with contractors, engineers, and agencies
  • Provide reports, updates, and operational analysis

Emergency Response

  • Respond to facility-related emergencies and critical incidents
  • Provide leadership during crisis situations to ensure continuity of operations

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum:
    • 5 years of progressive facilities/construction/operations experience
    • 3 years of leadership/supervisory experience
  • Experience in K–12 or public sector environments preferred

Certifications

  • Valid Michigan Driver’s License
  • MSBO Certified Facilities Director (or ability to obtain within 2–3 years)
  • AHERA Designated Person certification (or ability to obtain)
  • OSHA/MIOSHA training
  • Lead Renovation Certification
  • Preferred: PMP, PE, or energy management certifications

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

  • Strong technical knowledge of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing)
  • Expertise in project management, scheduling, and budget control
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance and safety standards
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities
  • High organizational capacity with ability to manage both daily operations and long-term initiatives

Work Schedule & Expectations

  • Full-time, on-site position
  • Availability for after-hours emergencies, district events, and seasonal operations
  • Regular travel between district facilities required

This is a 260-day position represented by the Saginaw Township Administrators Association . Salary Range: $84,000 – $101,150 (+$2,500 for Master’s Degree), with traditional benefits.

Ability to perform the essential physical functions of the position, which may include bending, twisting, reaching, pushing or pulling, lifting and carrying materials or equipment up to approximately 40 pounds, and standing or walking for extended periods of time.
