Quality Systems Technician (Inspection & Metrology)

The Viking Group
Hastings, MI

Protect what matters—every single day. At Viking, our fire protection technologies safeguard people and property across the globe. For more than a century, we’ve stood on innovation, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to safety. If you want your work to have purpose—and your ideas to be heard—join us.

This is an entry-level role.

A day in the life

You’ll start your day reviewing incoming materials, performing dimensional checks, and recording results. When something is off, you’ll open a hold tag in the Quality Management System (QMS) and coordinate with Quality Engineers to investigate root cause. Throughout the day, you’ll schedule and run lab equipment, keep gauges calibrated and traceable, and support production with timely testing. You’ll read drawings, set up fixtures, complete layout measurements, and document findings for teams that need the data. You’ll also help prepare for visits from agencies like UL, FM, and ISO, maintain sample retention, and keep the lab organized and audit-ready.

What you’ll do

  • Perform incoming, in-process, and final inspections/tests so only materials meeting specifications move into the operation’s supply chain.
  • Initiate and complete nonconforming material hold tags within the QMS.
  • Partner with Quality Engineers on defect investigations, root-cause analysis, and preventative controls to avoid recurrence.
  • Support supplier quality by collecting data and assisting in resolving supplier nonconformances.
  • Create formal test reports and distribute results to requestors in coordination with Quality Engineering.
  • Assist with in-plant sampling, routine inspections, and test activities for approval bodies (e.g., UL, FM, ISO).
  • Strengthen the QMS by participating in internal audits and contributing to preventive and corrective actions.
  • Help administer the calibration program for inspection/test gauges across Production and QA—ensuring instruments in use are calibrated on schedule with documented traceability.
  • Maintain housekeeping of the QA lab and all sample/test areas.
  • Control sample retention inventory and related QMS documentation.
  • Escalate issues that could impact product quality to Quality Engineers and the Manager of Quality Assurance immediately.
  • Operate, schedule, and maintain QA lab equipment to support Production and other departments.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings to inspect components, tooling, fixtures, and finished goods.
  • Set up and assemble samples/components on the measuring table to capture dimensional data.
  • Review supplier submissions for dimensional accuracy.
  • Use additional measuring devices as needed to complete dimensional layouts and quality records.
  • Design and/or procure measurement fixtures required to evaluate product/component samples.
  • Develop documentation to present, report, maintain, and archive measurement data.
  • Contribute to Engineering Change Notice (ECN) and Engineering Change Request (ECR) processes.
  • Enter critical information into QA databases and the company ERP system.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What you’ll bring

  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness to learn capability and statistical methods to analyze supplier and internal data.
  • Ability to perform measurement and dimensioning using geometric tolerancing principles.
  • Structured, systematic problem-solving skills.
  • Comfort reviewing data to spot trends, draw conclusions, and drive change.

  • GD&T
  • Quality inspection experience
  • Data analysis and manipulation
  • Measurement System Analysis (MSA)
  • Supplier management
  • Manufacturing instruction (MI)
