President

University of Detroit Jesuit High School & Academy
Detroit, MI

The U of D Jesuit Opportunity:

The Board of Directors of the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy seeks its next President to deepen and advance its longstanding commitment to forming “ Men for Others ” for the greater honor and glory of God.

Founded in 1877 by the Society of Jesus, U of D Jesuit is a Catholic, college preparatory school serving young men in grades 7-12 from Detroit, Southeast Michigan, and beyond. From its founding, U of D Jesuit has committed unwaveringly to the City of Detroit and the greater metro region by educating generations of young men to embody the five characteristics of the Graduate at Graduation: open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice. Shaped by these Jesuit hallmarks, our graduates are recognized both for the way they carry themselves and for the impact they make as Men for Others .

As we approach our Sesquicentennial Anniversary, our next President will take the helm at an exciting new chapter in the school’s rich history. As the oldest continuously functioning secondary school in Detroit, U of D Jesuit has an enduring reputation for shaping young men of competence, conscience, and compassion. Our historic campus and the evolving educational landscape call for a leader who can build on our strengths and seize new opportunities with fortitude and pastoral care, while also boldly advancing its spiritual, educational, and financial strength.

St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, wrote in the First Principle and Foundation of the Spiritual Exercises that, “Our one desire and our one choice should be what is more conducive to the end for which we are created.” Centuries later, the Jesuit tradition uses the term magis as a shorthand way to advocate tirelessly for discerning and committing to what is deeper, more purposeful, and more aligned with God’s call.

At the highest level, U of D Jesuit’s next President will strive for the magis in every aspect of the school’s mission. U of D Jesuit’s next President will be a builder, a principled thinker, and someone who— firmly grounded in the rich and unique tradition of a Jesuit education— will propel the school community forward not by doing more, but by choosing what is greater.

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • A practicing Catholic in good standing, grounded in a deep, balanced understanding of the Church’s pastoral, social, and moral dimensions.
  • An intentional disciple of Jesus Christ, steeped in the Jesuit tradition of education and shaped by Ignatian spirituality, with lived experience of the Spiritual Exercises (to be undertaken early in their tenure, if not already completed).
  • A strategic and discerning leader who can envision a bold future for U of D Jesuit and inspire the community to strive for the magis as it animates that vision. A dynamic ambassador to alumni, faculty and staff, current and future families, benefactors, and the wider public, in addition to serving as the primary contact between the school and the Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus and the Archdiocese of Detroit.
  • A compelling communicator who builds trust, fosters collaboration, and strengthens the school’s unique mission and impact in Detroit and beyond.
  • A proven fundraiser, capable of leading annual giving, capital campaigns, and planned giving, seeking not simply to raise money, but to secure resources and build relationships that most substantively advance the mission.
  • An educator at heart with significant teaching and/or administrative experience who understands, embodies, and advances the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (context, experience, reflection, action, and evaluation) throughout the school.
  • An effective manager accustomed to navigating complex, multifaceted initiatives with dexterity, resolve, and compassion.
  • An intentional listener and steward of school culture, who is in tune with the issues on the minds and hearts of faculty, staff, students, and parents.
  • An empathic supporter of the marginalized, with a commitment to the Catholic Social Teaching of the preferential option for the poor, and a dedication to making Jesuit education accessible to families of all socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • A guardian of the well-being of the entire school community, who takes personal responsibility for ensuring a safe, secure environment.
  • A person committed to self-reflection, continuous growth, and making decisions rooted in prayerful Ignatian discernment.
  • A courageous shepherd who will care deeply and wholeheartedly for the mission of U of D Jesuit and for each person entrusted to its care.
