Technical Training Developer - Contract Position
Technical Training Developer - Contract Position Ryerson Brothers Excavating | Muskegon, MichiganAbout the Role
Ryerson Brothers Excavating is building a comprehensive training and operations manual using Trainual to systematize our growing excavation business. We need a Technical Training Developer to help us capture, document, and structure our processes—especially our field operations—into professional training content.
This is a contract position (3-6 months estimated) with flexible hours. You'll work alongside our field crews and office staff to document approximately 27 standard operating procedures across sales, field operations, accounting, and administration.
What You'll Do
Content Creation (70% of role)
- Shadow field operators to capture waterline installation, basement excavation, sewer line work, and other excavation processes
- Film and photograph field work with narration explaining each step
- Document office processes (payroll, accounts receivable, permitting, etc.) from staff interviews
- Write clear, step-by-step SOPs that someone new to excavation can follow
- Edit video and photo content for clarity and professional presentation
- Structure content within Trainual's platform for optimal learning progression
Collaboration (20% of role)
- Work with project managers and field crew to understand technical processes
- Interview office staff to document administrative workflows
- Coordinate with estimator on sales processes
- Present drafts to owner for review and approval before publishing
Quality Control (10% of role)
- Ensure consistency across all training materials
- Test content with new hires to verify clarity
- Make revisions based on feedback from owner and operations team
What We're Looking For
Required:
- Video production skills - comfortable operating camera equipment in outdoor/field settings
- Technical writing ability - can translate complex processes into clear, step-by-step instructions
- Construction/trades familiarity - understanding of excavation, construction, or similar industries (or ability to learn quickly)
- Self-directed work style - can manage your own schedule and work independently
- Adaptability - comfortable working in active construction sites, sometimes in poor weather
Ideal (but not required):
- Experience with Trainual or similar learning management systems
- Background in instructional design or corporate training
- Previous work documenting SOPs or creating training materials
- Video editing skills (Adobe Premiere, Final Cut, or similar)
- Understanding of excavation, utilities, or civil construction
What Success Looks Like
- By Month 1: 5-7 high-priority processes documented and approved (Customer Journey, Water Line Installation, Monthly Book Closout, etc.)
- By Month 3: 15-20 processes completed with video, photos, and written documentation
- By Month 6: All 27 processes documented, tested with new hires, and published in Trainual
- Quality bar: Content good enough that RYERSON BROS can hire someone from outside the excavation industry and train them effectively
Logistics
- Duration: 3-6 month contract (flexible based on progress)
- Hours: Flexible, estimated 15-25 hours/week
- Compensation: $35-55/hour depending on experience and deliverables
- Location: Muskegon, Michigan area - must be able to visit job sites and office
- Equipment: You'll need your own camera/video equipment; RYERSON BROS can provide subject matter experts and site access
- Schedule: Some field work needs to happen during active job hours (typically 7am-4pm); office documentation more flexible
