Registered Nurse (RN) Director of Surgical Services

**Surgery Director Responsibilities**

The Surgery Director has many important tasks, including:

**Daily Operations:** Plans and helps manage the daily activities in the surgery department. -

**Surgical Services Development:**

Assists medical leaders to grow and improve surgical services. -

**Strategic Planning:** Works with leaders to create a plan for the future of surgical services. -

**Improvement Activities:

** Leads efforts to improve how the department works and represents the department in team meetings. -

**Policy Development:

** Guides the team in creating and reviewing rules and procedures for the department. -

**Staffing and Scheduling:

** Organizes staff schedules to ensure there are enough people working during surgery hours. -

**Human Resources Coordination:

** Works with HR to hire, discipline, and fire employees, following company rules. Provides coaching and advice to staff when needed. -

**Staff Training:

** Makes sure all staff get cross-training so they can share job roles as needed. -

**Collaboration:

** Works with doctors, management, and other departments to provide coordinated services for patients. - **Service Coordination:

** Ensures that services within and outside the department are well coordinated. -

**Quality Monitoring:** Checks and works to improve the quality of surgical care provided in the department. - **Budget Management:

** Helps recommend and monitor the budget for the department. -

**Professional Environment:

** Treats all patients, families, visitors, and coworkers with respect to create a friendly and professional environment. -

**Teamwork:

** Promotes good working relationships and works effectively within the department and with other departments. - **Punctuality:

** Arrives to work on time and follows the work schedule. -

**Community Involvement:** Participates in community activities to promote surgical services. -

**Provider Recruitment:

** Helps to recruit and onboard new surgical providers.

**Requirements**

- Must be a team player and work well in a diverse environment.

- Strong communication skills are needed. - Good attendance is very important.

- Flexibility and a positive attitude are necessary; different work schedules may be required.

- Must have an active Michigan RN license.

- A Bachelor’s in Nursing (BSN) is needed.

- ACLS certification is required (there is a 3-month window to complete this certification).

- 3-5 years of experience in a surgical leadership role is required.

- Must be responsible for the department 24/7.

**Certification Requirements**

- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)

- BLS (Basic Life Support)

**State License Requirements** - Michigan
