The Lead Dental Hygienist provides clinical and administrative support, working collectively with the dental team, delivering dental hygiene services while ensuring the highest standards of care and practice efficiency. This role combines hands-on patient care with leadership responsibilities, making it essential for the lead hygienist to balance clinical expertise with team management. The lead hygienist ensures that our patients (adults and children) receive high-quality hygiene services along with comprehensive patient centered oral healthcare.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensures all actions, job performance, personal conduct and communications represent the organization in a highly professional manner.
- Examines and provide direct patient care regarding dental/oral conditions; provides oversight in preventative care and develops treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care and professional practice guidelines; refers individuals for dental treatment as indicated.
- Completes patient screening procedures such as dental assessments, reviews of health history, oral cancer screenings, head and neck inspections and blood pressure and pulse taking.
- Exposes, processes and mounts dental radiographs (x-rays).
- Performs routine and advanced dental hygiene procedures; dental prophylaxis; removes calculus and plaque (hard and soft deposits) from all surfaces of the teeth and applies preventative materials to the teeth (sealants and fluorides).
- Makes impressions of patients’ teeth for study casts.
- Performs procedures involving team periodontal surgical techniques.
- Advises patients, parents or guardians concerning diet, hygiene and disease prevention; provides health and wellness advice to patients/families.
- Effectively communicates with other health care providers or community resources to provide comprehensive, all-encompassing care.
- Educates patients/families and the community about oral health related disease and prevention and self-management of acute and chronic dental conditions; recommends interventions to modify behaviors associated with health risks.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in dental Hygiene from an accredited education program.
- Active Michigan licensure as a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) and be eligible for appropriate credentialing.
- Minimum of five (5) years clinical experience.
- Must be able to work cooperatively with staff and others involved in the delivery of services to patients.
- Knowledge of public health principles and practices must be comfortable with community outreach.
- Must be proficient with Electronic Dental Records.
- Experience in treating patients of all ages.
- Critical thinking and strong problem-solving skills must demonstrate an ability to remain calm and perform effectively and professionally during peak periods of activity and in emergency situations.
- Good chairside manners help patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment.
