Position Summary
The Mechanical Design Checker is responsible for reviewing, validating, and verifying mechanical designs, CAD models, assemblies, and engineering documentation related to Body-in-White (BIW) assembly tooling and fixtures. This role ensures all tooling designs comply with customer specifications, North American automotive standards, NAAMS standards, and internal engineering requirements. The Mechanical Design Checker works closely with design engineers, project teams, controls engineers, manufacturing personnel, and customers to ensure design accuracy, functionality, manufacturability, and quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and validate NX CAD models, assemblies, and detailed drawings for BIW tooling applications.
- Verify mechanical designs for framing lines, bodyside systems, sub-assemblies, GEO fixtures, re-spot fixtures, and welding tooling.
- Ensure compliance with customer standards, NAAMS standards, and North American automotive manufacturing specifications.
- Perform design audits and quality checks to identify errors, omissions, interferences, dimensional issues, and compliance gaps.
- Review fixture and detail stack-up methodologies to ensure proper part location, repeatability, and dimensional accuracy.
- Validate tooling geometry setting strategies and assembly processes.
- Analyze mechanical designs for manufacturability, assembly, maintenance accessibility, and operational effectiveness.
- Support design reviews and provide technical feedback to design engineers and project teams.
- Review controls-related documentation to ensure mechanical design requirements are properly coordinated with controls design.
- Validate engineering deliverables including 2D drawings, 3D models, BOMs, layouts, technical specifications, and customer documentation.
- Troubleshoot mechanical design issues and recommend corrective actions.
- Analyze project data and technical information to identify customer, supplier, and process requirements.
- Assist with machine installation, commissioning, startup activities, and final customer acceptance as required.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to tooling design standards and checking procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree, Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, or related technical field.
- Strong proficiency with Siemens NX CAD software.
- Experience supporting General Motors (GM) programs preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in mechanical design, tooling design, or design checking within the automotive industry.
- Experience with Body-in-White (BIW) assembly tooling and fixture design.
- Knowledge of North American automotive manufacturer standards and specifications.
Required Technical Skills
Tooling and Fixture Design
- Mechanical design experience for Body Shop tooling and BIW assembly systems.
- Understanding of body assembly geometry setting methodologies.
- Knowledge of fixture tooling for:
- Framing lines
- Bodyside systems
- Sub-assembly stations
- GEO fixtures
- Re-spot fixtures
- Experience with fixture stack-up analysis and locator methodologies.
- Understanding of automotive assembly strategies and part flow within body shop operations.
Design Standards and Documentation
- Knowledge of:
- NAAMS standards
- Customer-specific standards
- GM standards and specifications
- Understanding of engineering drawing practices and GD&T principles.
- Ability to review technical plans, blueprints, drawings, layouts, and CAD models.
- Familiarity with mechanical design sequencing and controls integration documentation.
Software Skills
- Siemens NX CAD
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Engineering document management systems and associated CAD applications
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with automotive automation systems and assembly equipment.
- Understanding of welding processes used in BIW assembly.
- Experience with tooling installation and equipment commissioning.
- Knowledge of manufacturing process engineering and assembly line operations.
- Previous experience working with automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers.
