We are seeking a Controls Engineer to design, develop, and support control systems for custom industrial equipment and automation projects. This role emphasizes PLC programming, system commissioning, and troubleshooting, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable and high-performing systems.

Responsibilities

• Design, program, and modify PLC-based control systems, primarily using Allen-Bradley.

• Develop and support HMIs, electrical controls, and automation systems.

• Travel to support installation, commissioning, and startup activities.

• Troubleshoot system issues and implement real-time improvements.

• Collaborate with mechanical engineers, technicians, and customers to ensure optimal system performance.

• Provide on-site and remote support throughout the project lifecycle.

Essential Skills

• 3+ years of experience in controls engineering or automation.

• Strong experience in PLC programming, specifically with Allen-Bradley.

• Proven troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities in industrial environments.

• Ability to read and interpret electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics.

• Comfortable working independently and in customer-facing situations.

• Strong communication skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

• Willingness to travel for project support.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with robotics, such as FANUC or ABB.

• Exposure to Siemens PLCs.

• Familiarity with hydraulics, machining, or metal removal processes.

• Experience with assembly, testing, or commissioning of custom equipment.

Work Environment

This role involves approximately 30% travel, primarily within the Midwest, with extended site visits lasting up to two weeks at a time. The position is hands-on, supporting installs, startups, and customer sites. All travel expenses are covered with a $60 per diem. The work schedule typically involves 12 days on with a short break, mostly within the Midwest (MI, WI, IL), with occasional travel down South.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Traverse City, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $45.00/hr.
