HR Assistant

Position Summary

The HR Assistant provides administrative and operational support to the Human Resources department in a steel processing manufacturing environment. This role assists with recruiting, onboarding, employee records, payroll support, benefits administration, compliance, and employee relations while ensuring adherence to company policies and labor regulations. The HR Assistant works closely with production supervisors and employees to support a safe, productive, and positive workplace.

Key Responsibilities

1. Assist with recruitment activities, including posting job openings, scheduling interviews, and coordinating candidate communications.
2. Prepare new hire paperwork and conduct onboarding and orientation for production and office employees.
3. Maintain accurate employee personnel files and HR records in compliance with company policies and legal requirements.
4. Support payroll by tracking attendance, timecards, overtime, and employee data.
5. Process employee status changes, benefits enrollment, and other HR transactions.
6. Respond to employee inquiries regarding company policies, benefits, and HR procedures.
7. Assist with maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, including OSHA requirements and manufacturing safety policies.
8. Coordinate training sessions, safety training records, and employee development programs.
9. Assist with performance review administration and employee recognition programs.
10. Maintain confidentiality of employee information and HR documentation.
11. Support HR initiatives related to employee engagement, retention, and workforce planning.
12. Generate HR reports and maintain HR databases.
13. Participate in HR projects and perform other administrative duties as assigned.

14. Qualifications

15. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
16. 1–3 years of HR or administrative experience, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
17. Knowledge of HR practices, employment laws, and payroll processes.
18. Experience with HRIS systems and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
19. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
20. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information professionally.
21. Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

22. Preferred Qualifications

23. Experience in steel processing, metal fabrication, or heavy manufacturing.
24. Familiarity with timekeeping systems and payroll software.
25. HR certification (SHRM-CP, PHR, or equivalent) is a plus.
26. Bilingual skills are an asset.

28. Ability to move throughout office and production areas.
29. Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
30. Ability to work in a manufacturing environment, including exposure to noise and varying temperatures while following all required PPE and safety procedures.
