What We Look For In a Legal Writing Tutor
- Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of legal memorandum structure, brief writing, case analysis, IRAC methodology, citation format including Bluebook rules, persuasive legal argumentation, and contract drafting fundamentals. Ability to explain issue spotting, rule synthesis from multiple authorities, application of law to facts, and proper legal citation while preparing law students for moot court, clinic work, and legal practice.
- Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching case briefing, rule synthesis, and IRAC structured analysis for legal documents. Guides students through identifying relevant legal issues, synthesizing rules from statutes and case law, applying rules to client fact patterns, and constructing persuasive arguments in memoranda and briefs. Emphasizes precision in language, proper authority citation, and developing a professional legal writing voice.
- Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with law school legal writing curricula and common challenges such as mastering IRAC structure, synthesizing multiple authorities, and meeting Bluebook citation requirements. Adapts instruction using model memoranda, peer editing exercises, and incremental drafting assignments to support first-year law students and advanced students preparing for legal writing competitions, clinic placements, and bar examination essay portions.
- Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
- Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
- Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
