Repair Operations Production Leader

Department: Repair

A day in this role

When you walk the floor each morning, you set the tempo for safety, quality, cost, and delivery. You review hot jobs, align people and machines, and collaborate with the Shop Foreman to lock in the day’s startup and the week’s staffing plan. By mid-morning you’re leading a stand-up to surface risks, using production reports to shape priorities and capacity forecasts. Throughout the day, you’re clearing bottlenecks, coordinating with the Repair Expediter on outsourced machining, and keeping Sales and Production updated so customer commitments stay on track. Before you wrap, you review APP quality items, assign owners, and prepare for your weekly metrics meeting with leadership.

What you’ll lead

  • Direct daily shop operations to meet schedule, delivery, and cost targets, while upholding rigorous safety and quality standards.
  • Build a flexible team culture through job rotation, cross-training, and mentorship; motivate the crew to hit performance goals.
  • Run weekly production meetings; maintain visibility on near-due jobs and proactively resolve constraints.
  • Analyze open/released job orders to set priority; synchronize assignments and weekend work plans with the Shop Foreman.
  • Monitor emergency and expedited work; communicate status with Sales, Production, and other departments.
  • Oversee vendor outsourcing reports; partner with the Repair Expediter to track external repair and machining progress.
  • Use production reporting to drive forecasting and capacity planning; identify cost reductions and process efficiencies.
  • Support estimating for cylinder repair projects and coordinate logistics, including trucking and inter-facility transfers.
  • Collaborate on strategic production plans and continuous improvement initiatives for the repair operation.
  • Engage daily with company leadership (VP/President) on performance, risks, and key updates.
  • Own quality/APP issue resolution; run monthly reviews to ensure accountability and closure.
  • Complete performance reviews and development plans on time; execute initiatives from the annual business plan.

Team leadership

You will directly supervise all shop employees and the repair office supervisor. Responsibilities include training, workload planning, direction-setting, performance appraisals, recognition and corrective action, and resolving employee concerns in accordance with company policy and applicable laws.

Skills used every day

  • Language: Read and interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedures; write clear reports and correspondence; speak effectively to groups of employees and customers.
  • Math: Comfort with advanced concepts (exponents, logarithms, quadratics, permutations) and statistics (ANOVA, correlation, sampling theory, factor analysis) as applied to production and quality analysis.
  • Reasoning: Define problems, gather data, establish facts, draw sound conclusions, and interpret complex technical instructions in mathematical or diagram formats.
  • Systems: Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet Explorer; working knowledge of Made2Manage (M2M) and AutoCAD.

Background that sets you up for success

  • Education/Experience: High school diploma or GED required; 4–6 years of relevant experience/training, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
  • Technical know-how: Mechanical background with cylinder product familiarity; able to read drawings and use measuring tools (tape measure, micrometers, check gauges, calipers).
  • Operations fluency: Experience in process-flow manufacturing, ensuring materials and parts are available to meet schedule; adept at managing order flow and WIP.
  • Leadership: Capable of working independently and coordinating a team responsible for the cylinder repair process.
  • Digital tools: Comfortable with Microsoft Office and the company’s Made2Manage (M2M) system for tracking orders and materials.
