Principal cloud application engineer
Job Description
We are seeking a Sr Cloud Engineer to help lead the evolution of Oracle's Unified Commerce platform and core SaaS services. This is a hands-on development role with organizational impact: setting standards, guiding technical direction, writing code, and mentoring senior engineers while ensuring our solutions are resilient, scalable, and cloud-native.
You will own cross-product architecture initiatives, drive best practices across engineering teams, and influence decisions in highly complex, ambiguous situations. This role requires deep technical expertise, leadership presence, and the ability to balance innovation with operational excellence.
Architecture & Design

Define and evolve cross-product SaaS architecture for Unified Commerce services.

Lead technical design reviews for highly complex, distributed systems, providing balanced judgment and insight in ambiguous situations.

Champion standardization in APIs, event-driven integration (Kafka, gRPC, REST, GraphQL), and service-to-service communication.

Establish patterns for high-throughput, multi-tenant, cloud-native microservices that enable innovation and competitive advantage.
Engineering Excellence

Drive adoption of Java tech-stack, Redis, Oracle DB/ATP, and modern frameworks.

Promote contract testing, resilience engineering, load/chaos testing, and CI/CD with frequent, automated deployments.

Set coding and design standards across the organization, mentoring IC3-IC4 engineers and empowering them to own solutions.

Lead observability-first engineering (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus/Grafana, OCI Logging) with clear SLO/SLA objectives, ensuring accountability for results.
Reliability, Security & Operations

Guide operational excellence practices, including blue/green and canary deployments, progressive delivery, and fault isolation.

Ensure designs prioritize resilience, scalability, and cost efficiency, anticipating potential risks and planning accordingly.

Encourage awareness of security and compliance frameworks (PCI, SOC2, PII) and foster an environment of ethical, responsible design.
Leadership & Influence

Mentor and grow teams of senior developers and architects, motivating them to align with organizational goals.

Build strong partnerships across internal teams, resolving competing priorities and fostering collaboration across boundaries.

Lead cross-functional reviews with internal stakeholders, presenting complex technical concepts in a clear, persuasive way.

Create an environment that encourages innovation, inclusion, and measured risk-taking, while holding self and others accountable for high performance.
Responsibilities
-
BS or MS in Computer Science or related technical field.
-
12+ years of experience delivering large-scale, multi-tenant, highly available SaaS applications.

Expertise with Java tech-stack, REST/gRPC APIs, Kafka/Event Streaming, Redis, Oracle DB/ATP, GraphQL.

Proven track record of designing and deploying cloud-native, microservices-based systems on Kubernetes (OKE or other).

Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated deployments, and DevOps practices.

Strong background in distributed systems, performance optimization, and troubleshooting at scale.

Experience with observability and operational tooling (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus/Grafana, OCI Logging).

Demonstrated ability to influence architecture direction, mentor senior engineers, and deliver business results through execution excellence.
Preferred Qualifications

Exposure to AI-assisted engineering practices and emerging software productivity tools.

Familiarity with multi-cloud environments (OCI, AWS, Azure) and container platforms beyond Kubernetes (e.g., OpenShift, AKS, EKS).

Background in contract testing, chaos engineering, and resilience-driven design.

Strong communication and decision-making skills, with proven ability to secure alignment in complex, high-ambiguity environments.

US: Hiring Range in USD from: $102,200 to $251,600 per annum. May be eligible for bonus, equity, and compensation deferral.
Oracle maintains broad salary ranges for its roles in order to account for variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions and locations, as well as reflect Oracle's differing products, industries and lines of business.
Candidates are typically placed into the range based on the preceding factors as well as internal peer equity.

Paid time off: Flexible Vacation is provided to all eligible employees assigned to a salaried (non-overtime eligible) position. Accrued Vacation is provided to all other employees eligible for vacation benefits. For employees working at least 35 hours per week, the vacation accrual rate is 13 days annually for the first three years of employment and 18 days annually for subsequent years of employment. Vacation accrual is prorated for employees working between 20 and 34 hours per week. Employees working fewer than 20 hours per week are not eligible for vacation.

Paid sick leave: 72 hours of paid sick leave upon date of hire. Refreshes each calendar year. Unused balance will carry over each year up to a maximum cap of 112 hours.
