Operations Build Supervisor - Battery Cell Development Center

The Role

The Operations Build Supervisor leads day‑to‑day operations and build execution for advanced battery cell processes within GM’s Battery Cell Development Center (BCDC). This hands‑on leader supports launch readiness, manages a team of build technicians across multiple shifts, and partners with engineering and process teams to develop, validate, and optimize manufacturing systems. The role requires strong technical capability, sound judgment, and the ability to adapt and drive results in a fast‑paced development environment.

What You'll Do

Safety & Compliance Leadership

Champion a strong safety culture aligned with GM standards and regulatory requirements.

Support deployment of environmental, health, and safety systems, procedures, and audits.

Support incident investigations and corrective actions.

Ensure emergency response readiness and compliance with OSHA, hazardous materials, and PSM-related requirements.

Operations and Build Team Leadership

Model GM’s cultural behaviors and foster a positive, inclusive team environment.

Lead, develop, and coach a team (up to 12 employees) across all shifts.

Conduct selection, onboarding, training, coaching, evaluations, and career development discussions.

Manage daily operations, adjust plans to meet schedule changes, and ensure responsive floor support.

Manufacturing System Development & Execution

Lead execution of build activities, root cause, and resolution for advanced battery cell manufacturing (slurry/ink, coating, calendering, assembly, formation, and testing).

Develop and maintain operational documentation including JES/TIS/SOPs, PFDs, PADs, PCPs, and PFMEAs.

Collaborate with engineering teams on process definitions, equipment specifications, commissioning, and validation.

Support launch, enhancements, and new technology integration.

Quality, Problem‑Solving & Continuous Improvement

Apply statistical problem‑solving tools (Red‑X, DOE, DFSS) to improve quality and throughput.

Support Built-in-Quality systems, inspection routines, and process capability improvements.

Document lessons learned to strengthen future program design, manufacturing systems, and operational execution.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration

Work closely with engineering, quality, supply chain, maintenance, facilities, and automation teams to resolve issues and improve efficiency.

Support acceptance and integration of equipment in partnership with suppliers.

Communicate effectively across all levels of the organization and influence decisions in ambiguous environments.

Scope & Impact

Supervises and develops employees supporting critical battery cell development operations.

Makes time‑sensitive decisions that impact safety, quality, throughput, and program readiness.

Plays a central role in scaling technology from lab‑scale development toward high-volume manufacturing environments.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

Minimum 5 years of Manufacturing Engineering or Operations experience in vehicle, powertrain, or cell manufacturing.

One year of direct supervisory experience, or at least five months as an internal GM group leader.

Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a team across multiple shifts.

Ability to wear PPE (safety glasses, gloves, hard hat, ear protection, safety shoes, clean room suits, respirators if required).

Strong mechanical aptitude and hands‑on experience with manufacturing equipment.

Experience with specifying, procuring, commissioning, and validating equipment.

Knowledge of GMS principles and experience with launch readiness.

Demonstrated experience developing and scaling manufacturing processes.

Ability to work off‑shift, weekends, or holidays as needed.

Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and troubleshooting skills.

Ability to manage conflict, provide effective feedback, and lead change.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

Experience in lithium‑ion cell manufacturing (slurry/mixing, coating, calendering, stacking/assembly, formation, EOL testing).

Experience in development, pilot, or startup environments.

Experience with EV/high‑voltage safety and lithium‑ion manufacturing hazards.

Automation, robotics, or AMR integration experience.

Experience implementing Built‑in‑Quality systems.

Red X, DFSS, DOE, Lean, or CIP certifications.

Expertise in TIP (Throughput Improvement Process).

Advanced understanding of manufacturing and assembly processes.
