Job Title: CNC Lathe Operator

Job Description

This role focuses on operating CNC lathe equipment in a busy production environment, supporting the lathe department with part production, set ups, tool changes, offsets, and minor program edits. You will ensure parts meet precise specifications through accurate gauging and documentation while working in a clean, aerospace-focused facility with strong long-term work stability.

Responsibilities

  • Operate CNC lathe equipment with minimal supervision to produce high-quality parts according to specifications.
  • Assist machinists with machine set ups, including loading and unloading parts, setting tools, and adjusting offsets.
  • Perform tool changes and make necessary offsets and minor edits on the machine to maintain part quality and productivity.
  • Gauge each part that comes out of the machine using supplied gauges to ensure dimensional accuracy.
  • Perform critical measurements using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges.
  • Read and interpret blueprints to understand dimensions, tolerances, and geometric requirements.
  • Apply GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) principles when reviewing prints and verifying parts.
  • Maintain accurate paperwork and documentation associated with each planned job, including production and inspection records.
  • Use basic math skills to perform measurements, conversions, and calculations related to machining operations.
  • Follow established machining, tooling, and machine shop practices to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Monitor machine performance, identify issues with finishes or dimensions, and communicate concerns to the appropriate personnel.
  • Contribute to a clean and organized work area in alignment with aerospace-quality expectations.

Essential Skills

  • 3–5 years of experience as a CNC lathe operator, including loading and unloading parts.
  • Hands-on experience assisting with CNC set ups, tool changes, and offsets on CNC lathes.
  • Proficiency operating CNC lathe equipment in a production environment with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to perform quality inspections using micrometers, calipers, and gauges, with strong gauging experience.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, including dimensions and tolerances.
  • Basic math skills to support measurement and machining tasks.
  • Proficiency in using a wide variety of precision measuring tools.
  • Experience working in a machine shop environment with machining and tooling operations.
  • Familiarity with GD&T and blueprint reading.
  • Consistent work history that demonstrates reliability and strong attendance.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with aerospace components or in an aerospace manufacturing environment.
  • Experience operating or supporting CNC lathes from manufacturers such as Okuma or Haas.
  • In machining and CNC set up beyond lathe operations.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain high-quality finishes.
  • Ability to collaborate with machinists and other team members in a production setting.

Work Environment

The role is based in a clean, aerospace-focused production facility with a strong backlog of work and ongoing investment in new machinery. You will work primarily on 1st shift, with typical hours from 6:00 a.m. to 3:30 or 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Saturday shifts run from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with overtime paid after 8 hours per day. The environment is a traditional machine shop setting, with CNC lathes, precision gauging equipment, and standard machining tools, and emphasizes cleanliness, organization, and adherence to aerospace-quality standards.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Wixom, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $25.00/hr.
