School Nurse
Academy of the Sacred Heart , established in 1851, is Michigan’s oldest independent school, offering a Catholic, college-preparatory education to girls (infant-Grade 12) and boys (infant-Grade 8) of many cultures and faiths. The School Nurse serves as a vital member of the school community, providing leadership and professional expertise in student health and wellness in support of the educational mission of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools. The School Nurse creates and maintains a safe and healthy school environment by promoting wellness, preventing illness and injury, and responding effectively to student and staff health needs.
Guided by the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart education, the School Nurse partners with students, families, faculty, and administrators to support the physical, emotional, and social well-being of each child and to ensure that health services enhance student learning and community life.
This role is full-time, but we are open to considering part-time or flexible arrangements for highly qualified candidates.
Qualifications & Certifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited school of nursing
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Michigan
- Minimum of three (3) years of professional nursing experience
- Current CPR and First Aid certification
- Allergy Ready, Head’s Up, or comparable school health certified
Preferred:
- Certified CPR/First Aid Instructor
- Pediatric Nursing experience
Technology & Skills:
- Proficiency with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and Student Information Systems (SIS)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
- Ability to manage confidential information with discretion and professionalism
Core Responsibilities
Student Health Services & Care Coordination
- Provide health assessments and first aid care for students throughout the school day
- Administer prescribed and over-the-counter medications in accordance with school policy and physician orders
- Develop, implement, and monitor individualized health care plans for students with chronic or specialized medical needs (e.g., allergies, asthma, diabetes, seizures)
- Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns, treatment provided, and recommendations for follow-up care
- Collaborate with teachers, counselors, learning specialists, and administrators to support student wellness and participation in school activities
- Coordinate care with the Athletic Trainer for sports-related injuries and health concerns
Emergency Response & Preparedness
- Serve as a member and leader of the Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT)
- Develop and maintain emergency action plans and student-specific emergency care plans
- Provide CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogen training to faculty and staff
- Activate Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as needed and serve as the primary medical responder during school hours
- Prepare emergency materials and medications for field trips, overnight trips, and special school programs
- Maintain first aid kits and emergency backpacks throughout the campus
- Advise school leadership on health and safety considerations related to weather conditions, outdoor activities, and special events
Health Education & Community Communication
- Provide health education and training for students, faculty, and families on topics such as wellness, hygiene, food allergies, chronic illness management, and disease prevention
- Communicate timely health alerts and public health updates to the school community regarding communicable illness and safety concerns
- Serve as a health resource for faculty and administrators in support of classroom instruction and school initiatives
- Promote a culture of wellness consistent with the Sacred Heart mission and values
Health Records & Compliance
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date electronic health records in the school’s EMR system
- Document all student encounters, medication administration, and health interventions
- Track and manage physician orders, medical clearances, restrictions, and emergency action plans
- Ensure compliance with FERPA and all applicable privacy and confidentiality requirements
- Notify families regarding missing, expired, or incomplete health documentation and medications
Public Health & Regulatory Reporting
- Collect, monitor, and report required immunization and health screening data in accordance with Michigan Department of Health regulations
- Coordinate vision and hearing screenings with the Oakland County Health Department
- Monitor and report communicable diseases and weekly illness trends to appropriate public health authorities, as necessary
- Inform families of immunization requirements, vaccine due dates, and waiver procedures
Supplies, Budget & Facilities
- Maintain inventory of medical supplies, first aid materials, and AED equipment
- Prepare and manage the annual budget for school health services and medical supplies
- Ensure readiness of health rooms, emergency kits, and mobile first aid resources
- Oversee safe storage and handling of prescription, over the counter, and emergency medications
Professional Leadership & Sacred Heart Mission
- Uphold and model the Goals and Criteria of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools
- Participate in Network and professional development programs as appropriate
- Contribute to the development and revision of school health policies, procedures, and standing orders
Program Evaluation & Continuous Improvement
- Collect and analyze health service data to identify trends and areas for improvement
- Participate in accreditation, compliance, and internal review processes
- Engage in ongoing professional learning to remain current with standards of school nursing practice
Legal, Ethical & Safety Compliance
- Practice in accordance with the Michigan Nurse Practice Act and professional nursing standards
- Comply with federal, state, and local regulations related to school health services
- Fulfill mandated reporting responsibilities as required by law
- Follow OSHA and Bloodborne Pathogen safety standards
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the school day
- Ability to lift and assist students or medical equipment as needed
- Exposure to illness and medical emergencies in a school environment
- Occasional evening or weekend responsibilities for school events or training
