CMM Programmer
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with CMM programming , dimensional inspection , GD&T , blueprint reading , and quality documentation in an automotive manufacturing or metal stamping environment. This position works closely with quality, engineering, tooling, and production teams to support accurate measurement, process validation, and continuous improvement for complex stamped parts, deep draw components, structural assemblies, lightweight components, high-strength alloy parts, and dual-phase material applications.
Responsibilities
- Program, operate, and maintain CMM equipment to perform accurate dimensional inspections on precision stamped metal components , subassemblies, tooling, fixtures, and production parts.
- Develop, edit, and optimize CMM inspection programs using approved software and customer-specific measurement requirements.
- Interpret engineering drawings , blueprints , CAD data, specifications, and GD&T requirements to verify dimensional conformance.
- Perform first article inspection , FAI , production inspection, layout inspection, capability studies, and customer-required dimensional validations.
- Support PPAP documentation , launch quality activities, production quality checks, and ongoing dimensional verification for automotive components.
- Inspect body-structural components, upper and underbody subassemblies, lightweight stamped parts, cold-formed extrusion stampings , high-strength alloy components , and dual-phase material parts .
- Analyze inspection results and communicate nonconformances, trends, and dimensional concerns to quality, engineering, tooling, and production teams.
- Create and maintain accurate inspection reports , measurement records, quality documentation, and traceability records.
- Assist with root cause analysis, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives related to dimensional quality and manufacturing process capability.
- Verify part quality against OEM standards , customer specifications, internal quality standards, and applicable automotive quality requirements.
- Support calibration awareness, measurement system accuracy, and proper use of metrology tools and inspection equipment.
- Partner with tooling and production teams to troubleshoot dimensional issues in complex deep draw , precision stamping , and high-volume metal forming operations.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe metrology work area while following company safety, quality, and manufacturing procedures.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a CMM Programmer , CMM Operator , Quality Technician , Metrology Technician , or similar dimensional inspection role.
- Hands-on experience programming and operating Coordinate Measuring Machines in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of GD&T , dimensional inspection , blueprint interpretation , and engineering drawing requirements.
- Experience with automotive quality standards , PPAP , FAI , production part approval processes, or customer quality documentation preferred.
- Background in automotive stamping , metal stamping , deep draw stamping , tooling, fabricated metal components, or precision manufacturing strongly preferred.
- Ability to inspect complex stamped components, assemblies, fixtures, and production parts to tight tolerances.
- Proficiency with common measurement tools such as calipers , micrometers , height gauges , pin gauges , indicators , and other precision inspection equipment.
- Experience using CMM or metrology software such as PC-DMIS , Calypso , MCOSMOS , PolyWorks , or similar platforms preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret CAD data , part prints, customer specifications, and quality documentation.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, tooling, production, and quality teams.
- Detail-oriented mindset with a strong commitment to quality assurance , accuracy, documentation, and continuous improvement.
- High school diploma or GED required; technical training, quality certification, metrology coursework, or manufacturing-related education preferred.
- Experience in an IATF 16949 , ISO, or automotive supplier environment is a plus.
Preferred Experience
- Experience supporting automotive OEM and Tier supplier quality requirements.
- Familiarity with high-volume automotive metal stamping production environments.
- Knowledge of structural automotive components, underbody assemblies, upper body assemblies, lightweight stamped parts, and high-strength material inspection.
- Experience supporting launch, production validation, customer audits, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, precision-driven manufacturing environment with multiple departments and facilities.
