Nuclear Medicine Technologist

**Job Overview**

This job involves performing various technical tasks that require good decision-making skills and creativity. A Nuclear Medicine Technologist needs to understand how to use special equipment, such as gamma cameras (for images), PET scanners, radiation detectors, and dose calibrators. They also need to be familiar with checking and maintaining all this equipment.

**Knowledge and Safety**:

The technologist must know about safety practices related to radiation.

This includes understanding how to keep patients and themselves safe from radiation exposure

. They should follow the principle of keeping radiation exposure as low as possible, which means managing time, distance, and using protective measures.

They should also be aware of rules set by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) about how to safely handle and transport radioactive materials.

Additionally, they need to understand Radiopharmacy, which is the preparation and safe use of radioactive drugs for testing or treatment purposes.

**Responsibilities** -

**Administering Radiopharmaceuticals (20%)**: This includes giving patients radioactive drugs, measuring their activity, and calculating the correct amounts. The technologist needs to keep records in a tracking system and perform tasks like preparing the drugs. -

**Understanding Procedures (20%)**: The technologist should know how to follow Nuclear Medicine processes, position patients correctly on the equipment, and check that everything is done according to the plan while monitoring the patient. -

**Starting IVs (20%)**: They should be skilled at starting IVs, choosing the right spot, and using clean techniques to do so. -

**Operating Equipment (20%)**: The technologist must know how to operate all Nuclear Medicine devices and be aware of the quality control checks needed for these tools. -

**Following Safety Regulations (20%)**: They should understand and strictly follow radiation safety rules.

**Qualifications**

- At least 2 years of experience as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist is required.

- Experience with Radiology Information Systems (RIS) and Health Information Systems (HIS) is a plus.

- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required.

- Certification as an ARRT (Nuclear) or CNMT is required.
