TITLE: Children’s Services Coordinator

REPORTS TO: Director of Shelter

CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time, Exempt

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:

Turning Point, Inc in Mount Clemens, MI is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization qualified employer for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). Turning Point, Inc empowers survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking through comprehensive services and resources while advocating for community action to end oppression and violence. We offer emergency shelter, housing, advocacy/counseling, forensic nurse examiner program & first response advocacy services, 24-hour hotline, personal protection order assistance and legal advocacy, community education, and systems change.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Shelter Children’s Services Coordinator is responsible for the everyday workings of the children’s program in shelter including the supervision of children’s program staff, interns, and volunteers. The Shelter Children’s Services Coordinator is responsible for providing support, advocacy, crisis intervention, childcare and activities to children in shelter. Additionally, the Shelter Children’s Services Coordinator is responsible for overseeing thorough and accurate data collection to contribute to quarterly and annual evaluation and funder reports.

SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Children’s Services Coordinator is responsible for the hiring, training, development and supervision of all program staff. The Coordinator is also responsible for supervising any program interns and volunteers.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:

The ideal candidate must have knowledge of survivor-centered, trauma-informed, and advocacy-based interventions with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking that are rooted in anti-oppression values and the empowerment model. Specific knowledge in crisis intervention, trauma-informed practices, lethality assessments, group facilitation, and safety planning is desired as are demonstrated success building teams, collaborating with peers, and solving problems. Candidates must also have knowledge of advocacy with survivors in various systems including healthcare, criminal justice, family court, child welfare, education, and human services. Additionally, candidates should have knowledge about victims’ rights, community resources, and the impact of violence on survivors and loved ones. The ideal candidate must have strong written and verbal communication skills. As our free, confidential services are inclusive and accessible to honor the unique needs, identities, and experiences of individuals who identify as a survivor of domestic violence, sexual violence, or human trafficking, candidates must demonstrate the ability to work with all survivors and understand the unique barriers that survivors with intersecting oppressed identities will encounter.

EDUCATION:

A bachelor’s degree in social work or related field is preferred or 3 years’ experience in related field

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide a safe, comfortable, caring environment that focuses on the needs of the child.
  • Create and provide activities to strengthen life skills and encourage social interaction.
  • Role model for parents and children and appropriate interaction including, praise, choices and consequences, confrontation and problem solving.
  • Provide families with information on domestic violence and sexual assault and help them develop a safety plan.
  • Assist in updating and maintaining an accurate children’s resources/referrals manual.
  • Act as an advocate to parents and staff on behalf of the child.
  • Conduct intakes and provide residents with crisis intervention, support, and referrals to community resources as needed.
  • Supervise children and provide transportation for field trips.
  • Develop and facilitate child & family groups and workshops.
  • Provide coaching, supervision, and evaluation for staff, interns, volunteers.
  • Responsible for the hiring, supervision, and staff development of program staff, interns, and volunteers, including facilitating at minimum bi-weekly structured supervision of all program staff.
  • Responsible for bi-monthly data monitoring in alignment with the agency procedure to ensure the integrity and accuracy of data input by program staff.
  • Maintain programs physical environment and donations.
  • Follow Turning Point’s policy on reporting suspected/witnessed abuse or neglect to Child Protective Services.
  • Utilize appropriate empathy, active listening and conflict resolution skills.
  • Orient volunteers to children’s program and coordinate volunteer schedules.
  • Keep child advocates up to date on needed information.
  • Implement agency and program mission, vision and anti-oppression and empowerment philosophies.
  • Administer and implement agency policies and procedures.
  • Maintain agency policy on confidentiality, record keeping and professional ethics.
  • Demonstrate ability to provide confirming and corrective feedback for the goal of developing and enhancing staff skills.
  • Oversee the integrity of program data required for funding source’s program reports and program evaluation.
  • Report potentially dangerous situations to Director of Shelter.
  • Attend all departmental and agency staff meetings, and other meetings required by Turning Point.
  • Conduct relationships with colleagues to promote mutual respect, improvement of services, and problem solving.
  • Participate in applicable staff and committee meetings, and other meetings deemed necessary by Turning Point.
  • Cooperates with all other Turning Point programs to achieve organizational goals.
  • Notify the Director of Shelter, Senior Director of Residential Services or Chief Executive Officer of any emergency situations that may affect Turning Point staff and/or clients.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must pass central registry and criminal background check as a condition of employment.
  • Must have reliable transportation, insurance, a valid Michigan Driver’s License and a good driving record.
  • Must have the ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Must be able to work independently and multi-task in a fast-paced office environment.
  • Allow for flexibility in job function and schedule, including occasional evening and weekend hours.
  • Ability and willingness to be available for non-scheduled emergency call-in and holiday shifts when necessary.
  • Ability to lift 20lbs.
  • Ability to climb stairs and stand for long periods of time.
  • Able to drive to various sites/agencies to provide services.
