The Rural Physician Supervisor provides clinical leadership, oversight, and coordination of all designated Health Division rural clinics across the Tribe’s seven-county service area. This role, under the direction of the Medical Director and Health Division Chief Executive Officer, ensures delivery of high-quality, culturally component and patient-centered care aligned with company values, federal and state regulations, and best medical practices. The Rural Physician Supervisor works collaboratively with administrative leadership, medical staff, and community partners to enhance clinical outcomes, improve access to care and support the overall mission of the Tribal Health Division.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
- Responsible for providing direct patient care services as needed and the overall supervision of the daily operations of the designated rural clinical setting and administrative responsibilities, including the overall supervision and coordination of daily operations within the rural clinical setting.
- Responsible for establishing and monitoring clinical standards, protocols, and best practices.
- Ensures quality, safety, and consistency of care across all designated rural clinic locations.
- Provides a wide variety of health promotion-disease prevention direct patient care services in the designated rural clinical setting to include medical evaluations, assessments, examinations, diagnosis, treatment, and management of a wide variety of acute and chronic disease conditions for patients of all ages.
- Provides and maintains the competency of clinical procedures, as defined and approved by the Professional Staff Organization credentialing process.
- Refers patients to specialty care, as needed.
- Provides individual and group health education counseling services during patient clinic visits and/or community based public health activities.
- Follows the privacy act guidelines, as established by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
- Provides supervision and administrative support to all the Providers listed within the designated rural clinic locations.
- Provides direct supervision of designated rural clinical staff at their practicing location.
- Performs peer reviews and annual performance appraisals to all the Providers located within the designated rural clinic locations.
- Participates in the Health Division and Medical staff quality improvement initiatives through assistance with data collection and analysis of patient care information to ensure that medical standards of patient care are met.
- Promotes culturally appropriate care that respects Tribal traditions, values, and sovereignty.
- Engages with Tribal leadership and community stakeholders to align services with community needs.
- Supports integration of traditional healing practices where appropriate.
- Attends medical staff and other administrative meetings, as assigned.
- Collaborates with Clinic Managers at all Health Division locations, Rural Health Program Managers and Medical Director.
- Continuously assesses and addresses the supervisory and management issues of direct patient care services and overall clinic operations within assigned clinic location(s).

CONTACTS:
Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, Executives, customers and outside vendor/service providers, customers/patients, Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurses, and Health Care Providers.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position light with lifting of twenty pounds and frequent lifting/carrying of ten pounds. Physical factors include constant use of hearing, near/midrange vision; frequent standing, sitting, use of smell, depth perception and color/field of vision and typing; and occasional driving and bending. Working conditions include occasional exposure to noise. Potential hazards include constant patient/client contact and computer use; frequent infectious exposure and exposure to needles/syringes, equipment/medical equipment, and occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, electric shock, and chemicals. Protective equipment/clothing needed to perform the job duties, i.e., gloves and masks. Frequent travel between regional clinic sites across the Tribe’s seven-county service area.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) Degree required.
Experience: Minimum of five years’ clinical practice experience to include minimum of two years in a leadership role required. Experience working in rural, underserved, or Tribal health settings preferred.
Certification/License: Must maintain Michigan Medical License and DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) License and Medical Board Certification in Family Practice Medicine or other Medical Specialty, such as pediatrics. Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver’s license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of General Family Practice required. Knowledge and ability to use word processing and spreadsheet and database software required. Knowledge of supervisory methods and practices required. Knowledge of Best Practices/Clinical guidelines required. Outpatient procedural skills preferred. Must be able to work with others in stressful situations with time constraints and deadlines. Strong leadership and team-building skills across distributed sites is required. Cultural humility and commitment to Indigenous health equity to include excellent communication and conflict resolution abilities required. Adaptability in tribal/rural and resource-variable environments is required. Must be able to work extended hours when needed to meet business needs. Must have excellent communication skills and be able to communicate effectively and clearly, verbally and in writing, by telephone and email and in a diverse range of audiences and settings. Must maintain confidentiality. Native American preferred
