Prototype Technician – Electrical

Position Summary

The Prototype Technician – Electrical is responsible for supporting the build, modification, testing, and evaluation of prototype and experimental vehicles and vehicle systems. This role works closely with engineering and technical teams to assemble electrical systems, build wiring harnesses, perform diagnostics, and assist with vehicle development activities. The ideal candidate has hands-on automotive electrical experience, strong troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced prototype environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the timely completion of prototype vehicle builds, rebuilds, and component modification projects.
  • Assemble prototype vehicles and components using engineering drawings, layouts, and verbal instructions.
  • Build, modify, rebuild, and maintain prototype and experimental vehicles.
  • Fabricate parts from engineering drawings and specifications as required.
  • Modify and update vehicle components and assemblies using hand tools and shop equipment.
  • Build wiring harnesses from prints and electrical schematics.
  • Perform bench-top and in-vehicle diagnostics of wiring harnesses and electrical systems.
  • Assist with instrumentation installation and vehicle preparation for testing and validation activities.
  • Support vehicle and component compliance testing efforts.
  • Weld, rivet, machine, assemble, and reassemble parts and components as needed.
  • Install electrical and mechanical components onto prototype vehicles.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot automotive systems, including powertrain, cooling, fuel, electrical, and HVAC systems.
  • Assist in evaluating test results and supporting engineering investigations.
  • Help train and mentor new technicians and mechanics.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 1–3 years of related technical or automotive experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Experience using common electrical assembly and diagnostic tools.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving abilities.

Preferred

  • ASE Certification.
  • Light fabrication and welding experience.
  • Familiarity with:
    • Wiring harness manufacturing and assembly
    • Harness test equipment
    • Electrical meters and diagnostic tools
    • Wire cutters, strippers, crimpers, and related hand tools
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or willingness to obtain one.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of automotive electrical systems and vehicle integration.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex electrical and mechanical issues.
  • Ability to work from wiring diagrams, blueprints, and engineering documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a prototype development environment.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and within cross-functional teams.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to read computer screens, technical documents, prints, and drawings with clarity and accuracy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and in various work environments.
  • Frequent use of hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to operate tools, equipment, and controls.
  • Ability to bend, stretch, reach, twist, and move throughout the work area.
  • Occasional climbing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and working in confined spaces.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in both office and manufacturing/shop environments.
  • Exposure to varying temperatures, weather conditions, heights, and intermittent loud noise may occur.
  • Requires collaboration with technicians, engineers, and other team members to meet project objectives.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and established procedures while maintaining safety and quality standards.
  • Strong focus and attention to detail are required in a fast-paced environment where repetitive and precision-based tasks are common.

Travel Requirements

  • Up to 30% travel may be required to support prototype vehicle activities, testing, and development programs.
