Research Support

The Michigan Court of Appeals is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Research Support, reporting directly to the Lansing Research Supervisor. Essential duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to the following:

• Proof reports and proposed opinions for typographic and punctuation errors and problems with grammar, syntax, and formatting. Perform cite-checking authority in proposed opinions.

• Type necessary corrections and ensure all required editorial changes are fully and accurately incorporated into the research reports and proposed opinions.

• Monitor case call reports each month and follow case progress to ensure that all research reports and proposed opinions have been uploaded in a timely manner for each case call panel.

• Manage the receipt, storage, and return of the lower court records and monitor outstanding record requests for missing materials that are necessary for the preparation of the research reports.

• Assist the research supervisor in monitoring case management within the research office, which includes entering appropriate docketing entries and generating management lists.

• Prepare monthly reports regarding the production of the senior research attorneys and research attorneys for the research director.

• Answer and route telephone calls. Open, process, and distribute incoming mail to appropriate persons. Prepare outgoing mail and correspondences, order office supplies as needed, and supply materials to offices for newly hired research attorneys.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent and specialized knowledge acquired through college coursework in paralegal, legal assistant, or related field and two or more years of experience in a law office, court, or other legal setting.

WORK LOCATION: Hall of Justice, Lansing, MI. At present, the Research Division offers a hybrid work option, allowing employees to work remotely up to three days a week. The candidate selected for the position must reside in Michigan after acceptance of employment.
