Exercise Physiologist

Summary

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to; assisting in patient care performing basic cardiology procedures, such as, holter monitoring, cardiac stress testing (GXT, Echo stress, Nuclear stress (treadmill and pharmacologic options), ECGs, event recorders, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, along with performing neurology EEGs and respiratory PFT examinations. , Providing supervision during exercise sessions, risk factor assessment, appropriate referrals, patient education and quality assurance. Being able to assess and work closely with Cardiologists to insure appropriate care is provided in a timely manner. Work efficiently with other departments and correlate exams as a team. Other functions that may be assigned.

Responsibilities

(25%)* Supervision of patients undergoing cardiac stress testing such as treadmill exercise or pharmacologic testing. Responsible to act as a patient advocate reviewing and obtaining patient medical record history to verify patient safety. Works closely with overseeing Cardiologist to assure the correct examination is being performed. Responsible for monitoring patient vitals such as blood pressure, oxygen levels, heart rate, etc.

(25%)* Performs necessary ECGs in hospital departments and outpatient walk in exams. Ability to maintain ECG completions through computer application to verify reads, attach orders, correct errors, and assign to Cardiologist.

(25%)* Supervision of patients undergoing pulmonary function testing, such as diffusion examinations, lung volumes with airways, pre and post spirometry, and complete bronchial provocation testing.

(25%)* Performs all other cardiac testing such as holter monitor application and scanning along with event monitor application, and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. Performs EEG awake or drowsy examinations per physicians order.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides excellent customer service.

Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental and hospital goals; attends/participates in departmental and hospital meetings.

Performs other work-related duties as assigned including assisting in other areas of the department as needed.

Provides department specific on call related duties days, evenings, and weekends as assigned.

Assists in the establishment and maintenance of the students. Assists in their educational experience as needed.

Responsible for assisting during emergency situations, addressing administrative concerns, supervising collegiate interns, ordering necessary supplies, overseeing all program duties.

Assists in obtaining physical assessment data including but not limited to: blood pressure, heart rate, oximetry reading, lung sounds, blood glucose levels and EKG monitoring.

Assures a safe environment for the patients to exercise.

Instructs patients on safe use of equipment and reinforces.

Utilizes appropriate lift equipment on a routine basis.

Markets to physicians by direct contact.

Possesses an understanding of infection prevention and control measures designed to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Maintains the standards of the infection prevention and control policies.

Follows hand hygiene policies and utilizes personal protective equipment as required.

Education: BACH

Equivalent Experience: Bachelors degree in Exercise Science or health related field and/or equivalent experience.Completion of a four to six month internship in preventative, diagnostic, and rehabilitative cardiology or equivalent clinical experience required. Completion of a basic arrhythmia/12 Lead EKG Interpretation course or equivalent experience and fundamental PC experience required.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner in person and by phone.

Basic knowledge of clinical exercise physiology, graded exercise testing procedures, preventative and rehabilitative cardiology (including nutrition, risk factor and behavior modification strategies), standard and exercise electrocardiography, and emergency/safety procedures.

Fundamental PC experience.

Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must also be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.

Must be able to start intravenous lines.

One year work experience in a hospital setting is preferred.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the .

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% or the workday) 10 lbs.
