Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

General Summary

Certified Nursing Assistants are responsible for providing daily hands on care to the assigned residents. Will be under the direction of the nursing unit Neighborhood Nurses, Nursing House Supervisors, Assistant Director of Nurses and the Director of Nurses.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs routine care for an assigned group of residents including but not limited to:
  2. bathing and showering of residents
  3. completion of body assessment
  4. shampooing residents hair
  5. personal grooming – combing of hair, shaving, nail care [both finger and toes]
  6. changing of linens and making beds
  7. toileting residents
  8. changing incontinent products
  9. ambulating residents that are able
  10. lifting residents – either using a lift or manually
  11. transporting residents
  12. documentation of care in the Geri Book every shift that care was performed per the OBID and documents accurately on the Medicare A forms.

Serves meal trays, feeds or assists residents with their meals, removes trays after the resident has completed eating. Measures and records resident’s data including vital signs [temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure], intake and output of fluids, food acceptance. Completes the bowel program with accuracy. Collects non-invasive laboratory specimens such as urine. Assists licensed nurses in performing tests, procedures and/or exams. Assists with admission, transfers and discharges of residents. Responsible to complete the resident inventory. Cares for the dying resident and gives post-mortem care. Knowledgeable of resident safety protocols and keeps gait belt on their person. Maintains resident rooms in a neat, clean, sanitary manner. Maintains and restocks supplies in resident rooms with resident name on the item. Removes and disposes of correctly any soiled linen or briefs. Maintains fresh drinking water in the resident’s room. Performs activities to promote the resident’s independence and is knowledgeable regarding range of motion. Follows infection control protocols and Universal Precautions. Communicates to the Charge Nurses any changes or anything out of the ordinary with the resident. Communicates any needs or concerns that the resident might have. May perform other resident care duties as assigned by the Charge Nurse or House Supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Must be certified as a Certified Nursing Assistant by the State of Michigan, Certification pending or be in Class to become a Certified Nursing Assistant
  2. Must complete the required 12 hours of inservice time required by Federal law within the time limit as set forth by the facility
  3. Lift 75 pounds or more
  4. Knowledge of proper lifting techniques
  5. Ability to transfer, move and reposition residents weighing up to 300 pounds
  6. Push and/or pull wheeled carts and chairs weighing up to 300 pounds
  7. Ability to discern changes in a resident’s condition
  8. Ability to communicate with the resident and other employees. Will refer families to the Charge Nurse when asking questions out of the C.N.A.’s realm.
  9. May be assigned any where in the facility to perform these duties.

Working Conditions

Works in resident rooms and charting rooms with exposure to noise, unpleasant odors and resident behaviors.
