JOB SUMMARY:

  • As a member of projects teams, is responsible for defining the finishing, assembly and decoration processes as well as for the specification, realization, development, and reliability of the associated means:

- in line with the project's QCDP objectives,

- in accordance with the NA development process and standards,

- following the rules of ergonomics and safety,

- until acceptance of the processes by plants (transition from project to serial life)

  • Is responsible for the deliverables defining and justifying the robustness of the design of finishing processes
  • Is constantly a driving force for any technical or methodological opportunity to optimize the project's QCDP or that of the plants (immediate applications or for storage in the technical economy portfolio).
  • Mandated by the Project Manager and/or the director of engineering, to be the technical contact at the client for finishing processes
  • Is the primary technical contact for the project team regarding finishing processes from the beginning to the closing of the project, and the technical interface with the suppliers of finishing means
  • Provides expertise to the project team and the costing team in terms of feasibility, cost, and potential risks related to finishing processes and associated means

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

A / PARTICIPATION IN PRODUCT DESIGN

Provides expertise to the project team regarding the feasibility and potential risks associated with the

manufacturing process. Assists the Product Design Leader or Customer in the product design to integrate the constraints of the finishing processes, proposing product adjustments to improve its finishing, performance, and quality level + piece cost and resources. Validates the compatibility of the part's design with the finishing process.

B / DEFINITION OF FINISHING PROCESSES

Acknowledges the technical-economic objectives and the project schedule Identifies the gaps between customer requirements and the technical acquisition conditions and reports them to the project manager. Prepares, in collaboration with the project manager, a detailed inventory of the work to be done. Schedules and organizes the sequence of work to be carried out, in accordance with the project timeline. Defines the manufacturing overview of the product. Conducts workstation studies using existing data (time study) or estimation method tools (MTS, MTM...). Studies and presents multiple solutions in parallel to the project managers and director of engineering for validation, allowing to optimize the Quality, Cost, and Deadline results of the project. Leads the Process FMEA study for the entire manufacturing process (decoration, painting, finishing, and packaging). Assists the Molds Engineers in mold design to incorporate the constraints of peripheral press processes into the mold. Presents and obtains validation from the projects managers, the manufacturing site and the director of engineering for process studies and their costs (parts and means) during the definition phase and until launch.

C / IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW FINISHING PROCESSES

Defines the functional specifications of the specific process means. Technically co-validates with Purchase and Director of Engineering the choice of suppliers for the specific process means. Sends to the project managers the timeline for the implementation of the finishing means for the consolidation of the overall timeline. Obtains manufacturing schedules upon launching the implementation of new specific means and monitors with suppliers the proper progress of the schedules. Upon receiving preliminary studies and supplier studies, verifies consistency with specifications (using his own technical knowledge in the field and, if necessary, relying on colleagues and manufacturing sites), alerts the supplier by issuing reservations and accepts the studies of the specific means of the process (2D and 3D).

Ensures the follow-up on the manufacturing of specific process means by:

  • weekly technical meetings with suppliers asking for proof of on going activities (occasional visits to suppliers to visually assess the progress of the entrusted work when necessary)
  • establishing a corrective action plan with suppliers in case of delays, in conjunction with the buyer of specific means and the project team
  • communicating the results of weekly technical meetings to the project team

Organizes the finishing tests FAT carried out by the suppliers (planning of Technician needs, sending

components, sending packaging, organizing return of parts, ...).... Ensures the proper execution of FAT by suppliers by making sure that the testing conditions are as close as possible to the series conditions and formalizing the acceptance or rejection of the determining criteria (machine operation, dimensions, conditions, and quality criteria) + report. Analyzes the parts resulting from the finishing tests with the project team. Proposes tuning solutions to be carried out in specific means. Initiates and monitors the tuning of specific means. Informs the site. Gives approval for the transfer of specific means to the plant after FAT reports validation by the Director of Engineering. Ensures the proper execution of SAT tests at plant by ensuring that the conditions for conducting these tests are as close as possible to the series conditions and formalizing the acceptance or rejection of the determining criteria (machine operation, dimensions, conditions, and quality criteria), after approval of the plant and Director of Engineering.

Reports to the project team, after each trial, the information regarding product and process issues. Manages the creation and dissemination of all documents necessary for the operation, maintenance. Ensures that the technical data of the finishing process is properly integrated into the production technical file & in project folders. Trains with the suppliers, the production staff about the use and maintenance of means and processes. Provides technical assistance to the site during the ramp-up of the product. D / Animation and Reporting: Reports to the project manager and director of engineering on the progress of the study and the difficulties encountered and proposes solutions. Ensures compliance with commitments made regarding intermediate and final deadlines. Responsible for the conduct of the study within the budgeted economic conditions: analyzes the time spent, the remaining technical tasks, the changes in scope, and the rationale for their resale. Proposes additional productivity solutions for immediate application or for storage in the technical savings portfolio.

  • Responsible for process development costs. Formalize the feedback related to his area of expertise (Lessons learned).

PERIODICS

As part of his job, provides expertise in methods to teams in terms of costs, feasibility, and potential risks related to new finishing technologies. Provides methods expertise to the client (at the request of the project manager or director of engineering), to the project team or to sales representatives, by preparing justification files for the technical and economic solutions selected by NA. Participates in the technical evaluation of new suppliers of special machines. Participates in a productivity or quality improvement modification activity upon the request of director of engineering.

MINIMUM LEVEL OF EDUCATIONAL & TRAINING:

  • Must have Master in a technical field with at least 10 years of experience in methods and special assembly machines definition and implementations
  • Minimum of 10 years in plastic products finishing, assembly, decoration
  • Knowledge of automotive development. Organization, planning, and rigor. Mastery of a budget.
  • Sense of continuous improvement. Knowledge in special machine design (Machine safety, Mechanical construction, Electrical, Pneumatic, Automation). Knowledge in finishing technologies (Injection , peripherals (part handling, IMF process, IMD process, automatic assembly, packaging process,...),

Decoration technologies (pad printing, screen printing, syringe decorating, laser engraving,...),

Technologies for assembling plastic parts, Welding/butt rolling technologies (US, hot air, hot punch))

  • Knowledge of special machine specifications. Technical knowledge in reading drawings, ergonomics of workstations, Process FMEA, job study (MTS), Hoshin / Kaizen, Problem-solving methods
  • Must be able to work independently on new process development and troubleshooting of current production issues
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office

MINIMUM LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Soft skills required to develop and train associates and manage suppliers

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to communicate articulately and effectively, both oral and verbal, with clients, and at all levels within the organization
  • Ability to speak fluent in French and or Spanish preferred

TRAVEL:

  • Open to travel domestically and internationally with valid ID through State and U.S borders
  • Travel at night/late evening hours outside of U.S borders is cautioned. Follow all travel advisories.
