Senior Mechanical Designer - Powertrain Assembly (PTWA)
Location: Southfield, MI (Hybrid - 2026 Model)
Pay Rate: $36/hour
Interview Process: Google Meet or In-Person
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Designer with a strong background in Powertrain Assembly to join a high-performing engineering team. This role will focus on designing innovative solutions for powertrain assembly and test production systems while collaborating with cross-functional teams.
Candidates must have hands-on design experience within powertrain environments (no product designers or engineers without assembly experience).
Key Responsibilities
- Develop complete mechanical designs for:
- Manual, semi-automatic, and automatic stations and machines
- Design complex tooling related toPowertrain Assembly, including:
- Piston Stuffing
- Torque Turn
- Piston Travel & Compression
- Super Structures
- Create concepts, layouts, detailed designs, and stock lists using SolidWorks CAD software
- Modify existing 2D/3D models and create new designs for simple to complex systems
- Interpret and adhere to customer specifications and engineering standards
- Collaborate with manufacturing and commissioning teams to implement solutions
- Participate in project meetings and provide technical input
- Troubleshoot and revise designs to resolve operational issues or production challenges
- Present technical findings, proposals, and reports
- Support field activities including domestic and international travel as needed
- Potentially mentor and guide junior designers and technical staff
Required Skills & Experience
Technical Expertise
- Strong background in Powertrain Assembly Systems
- Experience with:
- Engine blocks
- Manual and automatic transmissions
- Cylinder heads
- Knowledge of:
- Powertrain testing (engines, transmissions, cylinder heads)
- System builds for various powertrain products
- Understanding of industrial processes and equipment integration
Software Requirements
- SolidWorks (Required)
- AutoCAD
- NX
- Microsoft Excel
Qualifications
- Minimum 5+ years of mechanical design experience in powertrain assembly
OR - Associate Degree in Mechanical Technology (or equivalent experience)
Additional Information
- Travel may be required (domestic and international)
- Hybrid work model anticipated for 2026 (split between home and office)
- Must be comfortable working in a collaborative, fast-paced engineering environment
